While Hillary faces myriads of idiotic and asshole questions about the last time she eve took a crap, the GOP contenders get a free pass 24/7 to say anything they want. And no one even asks them any questions. And when they do they are ignored and allow them to pass.
I just want fire or even strangle most our asshole media. They would even do PR for ISIS if it hurt Dems or Obama. I will bet they would defend the 47 and support replacing Kerry at the talks.
You just get damned sick of this bullshit. Meanwhile all the issues are being ignored. The GOP will start WWIII given the chance. We cannot just enter the Middle East and bomb a country like Iran on our own, which is what the GOP would do if a GOPPER were president. Bombing Iran would involve a response by China and or Russia.
The media is like a bought off referee. They will do everything possible to make sure that this race is close. We need a fairness doctrine as far as I am concerned.

(23,946 posts)As far as folks on DU are concerned the Corporate Five should be considered as enemies of the state.
What part of their cheerleading for the fake Iraq war and criminal torture and state kidnapping did anyone miss? Still trust....THEM?
Now the GOP is setting up a parallel government to ignore the Executive Branch and The Media is supporting the notion......co-conspirstors for sedition and illegal political activities...even worse than the Iraqi sedition.
A media now bought off by boatloads of never ending election season ad cash, a limitless pot of gold, as long as they play along with the money changers.

(5,178 posts)Just like slavery, there are those who would point fingers at the slave ships & traders but not the slave owners, or that is, not themselves.
They profit off the suffering and death of others, the destruction of our country, democracy and natural world. Then, they claim to be on the side of rescuing those things.
They don't care, and they never will, unless they can turn a buck off it.

I still don't think many Americas get WTF is going on and how they are herded and corralled like little gullible sheep, information limited and naive as to WTF is going on, presented hot button issues to keep them confused, in line and voting in all the wrong people.

(7,759 posts)I am trying to find the link of CNN interviewing Gergen where he said (not exact but close) "Hillary's popularity with the public is still high but it is taking a hit from the media." I thought to myself then," so the media determines popularity of our government officials and not the people?"
As soon as i find the link i will post it here so that you can get the true context and tone. He just kind of slipped in.

(3,498 posts)You make valid points about the media
abdicating it's duty as the 4th Estate.
But it's not really so much dem vs repubs.
It's really more about have and have not.
The PTB are controlling the message,
not the lowly plebes.
What is stopping the Democratic leadership
from using the media to push "our" agenda?
The reality is that leading Democrats are
simply not saying anything...ANYTHING!
Their silence should be viewed as tacit approval.

(3,498 posts)the 47 Letter is only one issue.
Where has the Democratic leadership been
for the past year on issues affecting the public?
There are plenty of concerns we all face yet
there is nearly a peep from the Congress Critters.
Where were they during the last election?
It's only the bombshell issues that are clearly partisan
which evoke a full throated retort from party leaders.
Aside from Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders
I don't see much leadership from the party.
The rest of them stick a wet finger to the wind
to see which way their campaign donors are blowing.

(614 posts)hardly anyone out there knows about this quiet regulation that was in place from the inception of the FCC in 1949, until - yup, you guessed it - the reagan admin, 1987.
he worked tirelessly - correction; his minions worked tirelessly; he was dementing - to be rid of the pesky regulation that required any and all networks that leased airwaves, be they radio or TV, honor the following:
if you accuse or malign any person or group while using national airwaves, you are compelled to give that person or group EQUAL TIME on your network in the same time slot.
many out there likely have no idea where that phrase equal time came from, or even ever heard of it.
however, it marked the meteoric rise of relentless hate-filled screeds - replete with shock jocks and faux snewz, and now the net - and the death-spiral plummet of news quality since.
[as a brief aside, note how these hi-decibel, inflammatory, incendiary rants rile those with too much time on their hands; read, the elderly and those on the road for hour after boring hour. these audiences require some stimulation, and this destructive genre gives it to them; it's all about appealing to the snake brain, and it hooks and addicts just like crack. hand it over to murdoch and ailes, and they broaden the snake brain appeal with bodacious blond babes and flashing lights and sirens, along with all manner of FEAR!! this stuff works; it's like advertising, you just have to know what to target and how. US advertising has been so good at this for so long, goebbels used it as his template for nazi propaganda; now the entire media genre is returning the favor. and because it is so successful, all the other networks have jumped on the bandwagon in order to get in on the cash. and as an aside to this aside, the latest numbers o'really is pushing on his show, showing fox on top? note that it is only with 29% of the market; next in line is 22% and so on. however, taking fox at its word as being the only alternative, when you add up all the other alternatives to the one and only fox, those alternatives get closer to 57% of the market. that's always been the case, but this comparison is never presented. now, tho o'really is enjoying increases in his audience share with this scandal (rubberneckers for the train wreck??), fox overall has been on a downhill slope as their audience dies off. we have to do better than outliving them, tho; dangers are immediate.]
if you don't think this simple little fairness doctrine rule had any such power, consider two things. first, note that, right after obama won in 08, the conservative chatter was all abuzz with the fear the rule would be reinstated. seriously; not many folks were watching for this, but i was, and it struck me as a clear indication that these folks very consciously know of this power, and deliberately rely on it for their propaganda. of course they would.
second, just think about what it would mean to have the fairness doctrine in place again. any time any of these blithering, bullying buffoons made one of their absurd, inflammatory, and/or erroneous remarks - be it hannity, o'really, savage, beck, you name it - they would be required to allow the target of said remarks to have equal time to defend themselves and rebut. seriously; think about how much hot air would be released from that insidious balloon.
and think about how much this powerful yet unassuming rule - embodying a simple courtesy that promotes civilized discourse; who would resist that? (i know; FREEDUMB!!) - would have the most profound and real trickle down effect. these freaks would no longer be able to get away with sliming obama, liberals, blacks, immigrants, the poorz, unions, or the educated; they could no long get away with the lies about banks or voter suppression or the US military or 'intelligence' or climate change. at least, not without open, uninterrupted pushback from those they target.
ben franklin had it right when he recognized that an informed public would make the best decisions for the country. but without the fairness doctrine in place - replaced by propaganda - we are no longer informed, but brainwashed.

(39,909 posts)the 2nd Part was the deregulation of Media Ownership, allowing the birth of FAUX News and other outlets owned by the same source.
This happened in 1996. It was called the "Telecommunications Act" and was signed by Bill Clinton.
https://www.google.com/#q=telecommunications+act+of+1996
The Telecommunications Act did far more harm to our Media than canceling the Fairness Doctrine.

(20,450 posts)First: Our side is too slow to pick up on the bias in the media. Because we have been conditioned to believe this liberal media bias lie, too many of us parrot wingnut talking points. Even right here on DU, and especially when it comes to Obama. Now for 5 years, anything negative about Obama, whether it's "he lied about being able to keep your insurance if you like it" or "he's going to gut Social Security" or any anti-Obama meme, it is OUR side that believes it. We quickly react to negative stories in the media and accept them as potentially true. Even many on hear ran with the Hillary email "non-story". I am a federal employee and the email outrage is a bunch of bullshit, trust me!
Second: Our side is reactionary and slow to act. Even when it comes to smart and thoughtful commentators like Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes or Larry O'Donnell--it's all about what Republicans did and how Democrats react. It's never PROACTIVE!
Third and finally: When our side is proactive, we are too passive. Too kind and conciliatory. Too milquetoast. We need to show anger. We need to get tough! I even blame the president for this. I also understand the risks involved. One of the reasons why the Corporate media hates Joe Biden is because he openly and forcibly speaks his mind. Now, I understand that there is a double standard: Republicans can be completely unhinged and say the most disgusting shit, but are never called "hysterical" or deranged. Indeed, like John McCain, they are embraced by the Corporate Media. Joe Biden can behave the same way; hell, he is much milder than McCain or any Sarah Palin, but is constantly torn apart in the Corporate Media. We here at DU can yell and scream about how weak Democrats are all we want, but Americans and the Corporate Media continue to hold these double standards when it comes to the two parties--Democrats are treated unkind when they are tough, outspoken, or strong.

(21,754 posts)Double-speak still prevails. Just not so blatantly. Orwell knew the direction we were heading. He just didn't have a mind as devious as the Karl Roves of this country to know exactly how we were going to get there.
In the bigger picture, it doesn't matter if you personally watch tv or not because most people do and you are only one vote. As evil genius, Rove, says, "they only need 50% plus one vote and that is all they play for. They don't fall into the trap that Dems do by trying to appeal to everyone.
Ultimately, the media is the obstacle.

(4,458 posts)it wants...we have to come to grips with the fact "Media" is Not News. There essentially is No Credible News Orgs anymore, not in the way we remember E.R. Murrow, Cronkite and Huntley Brinkley.
Turn them off. If they are so obviously propagandizing "our everything" then....Shut that whole thing down.
If no one is listening To the propaganda.......we lose nothing.
There is nothing to learn anymore unless you're into Sensationalistic Tabloid bs.
We are all at risk to be (and have been over the decades) manipulated by the repetitious and varied memes to change and sway public opinion to favor the oligarchs and billionaires.
Even from/by so-called "left-wing" MSM.
It's just my opinion....my experience.

(26,549 posts)Yes, the media sucks. Doesn't mean we have to make it easier for them.
Team Clinton has utterly botched the media response to the email non-scandal.
Democrats "keep their powder dry" when they go on TV. That makes for boring TV and you don't get called back.
Our party has spent the last 30 years desperately trying to appeal to the 1970's media. How 'bout we pull our heads out of our asses an appeal to the 2010's media?

(25,029 posts)Love the point in the second to last sentence about desperately appealing to the 1970's media for 30 years (even as we got our knife in its back too by going with media deregulation).
