But other Democrats joined Reid in expressing outrage about the GOP letter, including Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, who leads her party on the Intelligence Committee.
I am appalled at the latest step of 47 Republicans to blow up a major effort by our country and the world powers to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the Iranian nuclear program, Feinstein said. This is a highly inappropriate and unprecedented incursion into the presidents prerogative to conduct foreign affairs and is not befitting this chamber. This letter only serves one purpose to destroy an ongoing negotiation to reach a diplomatic agreement in its closing days.
In fact, Cotton has long indicated he would prefer the current negotiations with Iran fail to yield an agreement, as he said at a Heritage Action event in January.
The end of these negotiations isnt an unintended consequence of congressional action. It is very much an intended consequence, Cotton said.
Senate Minority Whip Richard J. Durbin joined Reid in an exchange on the floor after issuing his own statement critical of the letter.
Understand that if these negotiations fail, a military response to Iran developing their nuclear capability becomes more likely, said Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, in his statement. These Republican Senators should think twice about whether their political stunt is worth the threat of another war in the Middle East.

"When we see a major party, on a partisan basis, try to undercut and kill the negotiations while they are going on at this very moment in Geneva, then that goes a step too far. I am saddened," he said Tuesday on the Senate floor.

(106,886 posts)Instead of a partisan back-and-forth, which could derail the real focus, let it be about the 47 Repubs for a while. Obama, Biden and a few Dem leaders have made a statement. I think that's good for the time being. Let the media run down the ins and outs of this kind of diplomatic intervention and sabotage, focused on the Repubs action in sending an inflammatory letter - solely partisan - to a foreign government.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)The judgment of my Republican colleagues seems to be clouded by their abhorrence of President Obama. The Republican senators sent a letter to the Iranian leadership aimed at sabotaging these negotiations, Reid said. Its unprecedented for one political party to directly intervene in an international negotiation with the sole goal of embarrassing the president.
After Reids speech, he and his top deputy Dick Durbin of Illinois held a colloquy in front of Cotton. Durbin asked Reid if Cotton and his colleagues realized that one alternative to the ongoing nuclear talks could be another war in the Middle East.
Everyone should acknowledge that if we can work something out with Iran so they dont get nuclear weapons, weve got to try to do that, Reid responded.
