Emma Watson On Nude Photo Hoax: I Was Threatened Because Of Equality Speech
(Though Emma Watson is an actress, this topic falls under the category of political)
Emma Watson says she was threatened within hours of her groundbreaking speech about gender equality at the United Nations last fall. The actress made the confession on Sunday, during a He For She live chat on Facebook that coincided with International Womens Day. Watch the full video below.
As Gossip Cop reported, Watson launched the He For She initiative with UN Women to encourage men to join the fight for gender equality, with the star arguing that it is not a womens rights issue, but a human rights issue. Watson reflected back on the campaign launch during her Facebook chat, revealing, When they saw that the minute I stepped up and talked about womens rights, I was immediately threatened.
I mean within less than 12 hours I was receiving threats, she said. I think they were really shocked and one of my brothers in particular was very upset. Watson also spoke about the hoax that took place just a few days later, where, as Gossip Cop reported, a website had a countdown to the supposed release of alleged nude photos of her that never actually materialized. I knew the pictures didnt exist, said Watson in her chat, explaining that it was another aspect of the backlash she received for daring to speak out.
But Watson said that the hoax and the threats she received ended up convincing many that the actress efforts were all the more needed. That said, shes still trying to implement the message. I actually took a man out for dinner and I chose the restaurant and I offered to pay, Watson shared. It was really awkward and uncomfortable Im just going to say that. It was not going down well!
