(45,084 posts)A nice contrite tone with the wealthy would have worked sooo much better. I can think of two men who showed that they belong in that small group of selfish men.
Rec for his "angry" words that accomplished much good. Imagine if he had been afraid of being perceived as wanting to "soak the rich"

I wonder if we all have heard so much vitriol and hatred coming from the far right, that we no longer react to it in a normal way.

(306 posts)I think the reason that it is this way is because history repeats itself in this same cycle over and over and over. Crisis happens... rise to action to avert and correct it, and promises never to repeat.... peace and reform follows.... short memories, complacency sets in....challenges to sane governance, and policy are allowed to fester and grow.... BIGGER CRISIS !!!!

They are getting it all: Complete merging of government by corporations, take over of the food supply, the media, education, the prison system, access to park land and the destruction of environmentalism, and on and on. They got all of it---way beyond anything Franco or Mussolini could have dreamed of.

(15,257 posts)I really think this country is mainly populated by groups (tribes) of people that think alike, only talk to others "like them", get all their information from places that the tribe says is ok, roots for the same sport/team, hates people outside of the tribe.
This tribalism is probably the real reason behind all of the violence in this world. IANAS (I am not a scientist) but it certainly seems that most of the violence happens between people with very little differences. Sect-on-sect, cult/religion-on-same, race-on-race (almost all of our genetic material is the same.)
Some poor unfortunates like most of us on DU look at things from multiple perspectives and don't understand tribalism. We wonder why these people are so caught up in their own little worlds. I think it's because they get all of their information from their own little worlds.

(50,983 posts)because of the influence of corporations on the election and legislative process.
Violence and tribalism haven't much to do with it. Fascism can exist without violence. As a matter of fact, it does exist without being dependent on violence right here in the good ol' USA.
12 warning signs of fascism http://iweb.tntech.edu/kosburn/history-202/12_warning_signs_of_fascism.htm
1. Exuberant nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic images, slogans and symbols - National flags are seen everywhere in public display. Territorial aggression is explained to be mere destiny -- an unbidden greatness thrust upon the nation by history.
It is this burden of unique responsibility that now raises the fascist state above all previous constraint, no longer bound by international obligations, treaties or law.
2. Enemies Identified
This national cause is identified as unity against enemies - The people are rallied around a unifying patriotism directed against some common threat: communists, liberals, a racial, ethnic or religious minority, intellectuals, homosexuals, terrorists, etc.
The state's message is sometimes couched in an easily recognized religious theme. Amazingly, this language is used even when the full context of the teaching shows the meaning to be diametrically opposed. Any dissent is "siding with the enemy", and therefore treasonous.
3. Rights Disappear
Disdain for human and political rights - Fascist regimes foster an artificial climate of fear by intentionally amplifying stress and anxiety. Citizens naturally feel a strong need for security and are easily persuaded to ignore abuses in the name of safety. The few still willing to question are met with bullying and smear campaigns of intimidation.
Legislative bodies, if still in existence at all, are cowed into rubber-stamp submission with occasional ceremonial opposition. The judiciary tends to become activist in support of state views. The public often looks away, or even enthusiastically approves as rights are stripped away.
The concept of the individual inevitably yields ground, exchanged for the promised safety of the all-powerful state.
4. Secrecy Demanded
Obsession with secrecy and national security - The workings of government become increasingly hidden. Questioning of authority is discouraged at all levels of society. From office talk at the water cooler up through the entire apparatus of rule, guarded speech and secrecy become ends in themselves.
Troubling questions are muted and entire areas of scrutiny are placed out of bounds by simply invoking "national security".

But it won't be long now before FDR will be thrown under the buss.

(9,865 posts)......FDR with a white hot hatred. Because he was of their class and yet showed that it's possible to change the system to help ordinary people. Really, really hated him as a traitor.

(3 posts)Sorry, what is the reference to "uppity woman" about?
All I see is images of FDR and quotes from his comments about democracy (to which it seems a real stretch to impute anger).
Nice comments by FDR, and it is sad that the last few Democratic Presidents have not seen fit to be as openly concerned about these issues. (Or maybe they are drifting away from earlier principles; the Republican platform back in the 50s actually sounded more socially and economically liberal than many Democratic politicians today.)

(3 posts)Thanks for the clarification.
If FDR had been criticized (as he was) for some of his comments, would he have accused anyone of attacking him for being an "uppity cripple?" Seems like a real stretch, and actually sexist, to assume that if a woman's comments are criticized, that somehow it's because of sexist bias. The assumed hidden (sexist) agenda is just another version of all the right-wing conspiracy nonsense.
If someone comments on the inanity of comments by Michelle Bachman or Sarah Palin, is this because they are "uppity women" or because their comments are inane? Most people would agree it's the latter.
Men can be jerks and say dumb things, women can be jerks and say dumb things, end of story.

(40,367 posts)but certainly, for a woman politician to recieve criticism of a type that is not as often given to a man, is not unheard of.
Buffet and Dean both harshly criticized her style and "rhetoric". Maybe it wasn't sexism. Perhaps it is because they love Wall St. and want her to stop speaking truth to power. Whatever the reason, I find it deplorable.

(42,641 posts)When speaking of FDR and his many accomplishments, do not forget his Secretary of Labor for many years, Frances Perkins. It was thanks to this brilliant woman that Social Security was established, as well as the National Labor Relations Act that strengthened union rights.
Frances Perkins was in the view of many the real force behind FDR's many accomplishments. She deserves a huge place in the history books for her vision and ability to move the FDR administration to accomplish what it did.
Perhaps if she had been male she would be better known today.

(42,641 posts)because the GOP is determined to return to the pre-Roosevelt days. A shame that Perkins never got the credit for all she accomplished. Yet another example of the double standard.

(2,941 posts)Sometime during this generation or the next, the conservatives in BOTH parties are gonna wish they gave us the goddamn "pony" when we asked for it because history isn't kind to the type of corruption of principals that is accelerating our decline. Plenty of Republicans AND Democrats are responsible for this.
Our disparity is unsustainable. We need to give fascists the boot.
