Freedom from a mandated bacterial meningitis ( & DU a poll: mandated bacterial meningitis vaccine?)

You should read this story before voting. I voted yes: http://www.livewellnebraska.com/should-there-be-a-mandated-bacterial-meningitis-vaccine-for-nebraska/poll_6576cb9a-c094-11e4-9fb7-fff5176d24de.html

Maggi Pivovar had her legs amputated after surviving bacterial meningitis. A bill in the Legislature that would have required vaccination for the disease was killed last month.

Freedom from a mandated bacterial meningitis vaccine comes with a cost

By Matthew Hansen / World-Herald columnist

Last month, Sen. Mike Groene of North Platte stood on the floor of the Nebraska Legislature and said something state senators say when they are trying to kill a bill.

“LB 18,” he said, “is a solution looking for a problem.”

It’s a line that served as Groene’s version of a touchdown dance — his legislative maneuvering did kill the bill, one that would have mandated a meningitis vaccine for this state’s teenagers.

It’s a line he uttered after he and a group of state senators chose to ignore the following parade of bill supporters: family doctors, pediatricians, pharmacists, nurses, school nurses, infectious disease experts, public health experts, school executives, hospital executives and a Nebraska State Board of Health whose 17 members are appointed by the governor.

Maggi Pivovar spent a month on life-support with bacterial meningitis. She survived but had her legs amputated and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

It's disturbing when Mississippi of all states does public health policy better than California.

Middle Schoolers. This is when kids start swapping spit directly, not just eating after each other.

As my dr said, the disease will probably kill you, but if it doesn't, you'll likely wish you were dead.
