(23,542 posts)I'm a bit on pins and needles over this. Some unions have endorsed rahm. The powerful teacher's union endorsed Chuy. SEIU did not endorse in the first election. But, they say they will for the general. The reason why some unions are endorsing rahm is that he pushed for the minimum wage increase. One good thing he did.
Crossing my fingers on this. I do however think if SEIU endorses rahm, they might not have very enthusiastic members knocking on doors and making phone calls the way they did during the Obama campaign.

(1 post)It's true that a bill passed through our city council that will raise the minimum wage to $13/hr, which sounds like a great thing for working families, right? Except the raise doesn't come until 2019.
That's right...2019. That's not a mistake...some sort of mistype or an error. 2019.
The working people of Chicago are struggling NOW! And Rahm has exacerbated the problems of the working class during his tenure as mayor in the neighborhoods that need it most by closing schools & health clinics, de-funding parks and libraries, expanding privatization of public resources, raiding the pension funds of public employees, and using red light cameras and speed cameras to tax the poorest folks in our city.
Rahm has done this at the same time as his banker friends have looted the coffers of public education, and the corporate types, that don't create jobs in the city that benefit the working class, in the Loop that have benefited from public funds for expansion of their privately owned buildings (see the Hyatt & Boeing).
And to make matters worse, Rahm's donor list is identical to the union-busting governor that the folks in southern Illinois just elected. (That certainly doesn't mean nothing.)
Rahm is bad for the people of Chicago.
Some unions have endorsed Rahm, because they know he's going to continue to support corporations and that might mean extra work for the trades. SEIU has no cause to endorse him, though, because an endorsement of Rahm means an endorsement for a man that will work to cut the services that these folks offer.
