Wisconsin high school unveils $662,000 locker room renovations

It's been said that a town with money is a little like a mule with a spinning wheel: No one knows how he got it, and danged if he knows how to use it.

But when Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisc., came into a $275,000 donation, the school knew exactly what it wanted to build.

The donor eventually provided a total of $361,224 to totally renovate the boys and girls basketball locker rooms, as well as the boys and girls team rooms, a media room and football storage space and 25 percent of the money needed to revamp the heating and ventilation system.

The school provided $224,226 to complete the girls and boys toilet and shower room renovations, as well as the remaining money needed for the heating and ventilation repairs, some $56,500.

One might hope that their library and science labs are in such great shape…..

on edit, they also have been turning their football field into a palace….

but what about all the other students that need a good education more than a sports trophy? The kids who attend that school are the big losers, and shame on the school and the parents for shortchanging their kids future.

It is this nonsense that gives credibility towards alternative education methods (as well as the school reform movement).

Once NCAA players receive a salary, the destruction of American colleges will begin.

this just happened at the University of Alaska

"The $9.2 million price tag includes renovations to the hockey team locker room, ice rink renewal and electrical work."

Then they kicked out the childcare center

“In this fiscal climate, it’s just not realistic to try to be everything to everyone,” said Sarah Henning, public relations and marketing manager at UAA.

My son's school just went through 5 years of upgrades. The first things that were finished? The locker rooms, weight room and stadium (colleges come to see the weight room set up for their own plans). The actual school? Still doesn't have enough room for students and even though the renovations just ended, the school is using 8 temporary classrooms that look pretty danged permanent.

...though I didn't participate myself in school, and my own kids were music and theater geeks. But it takes all kinds, and I hope the kids really do enjoy the renovations. One of the reasons I dreaded PE was changing and showering in the locker room - which had all the atmosphere of a 50's era mental hospital.

I got to know plenty of really good kids as my own went through school, and they come in all kinds. I wouldn't want to see music or theater or computer labs skimped on, but sports are equally important and necessary. We don't have schools just so kids can learn how to get jobs, there is character building and socialization and all the things that go into a well-rounded person. Our public schools were built on ideas from classical Greece and Rome, and physical education was always fundamental - the mind and body develop together, or neither does well.

Spent that way. If someone is going to give money for a specific cause would you really tell them no?

So yes, I would tell them no, unless they wanted to cover it all.

While I am not a fan of organized sports, this school system does seem to value academics and the arts, too.

The Arrowhead School must be in a somewhat affluent area - they require that students bring their own technology "device" and I don't see much about financial assistance to purchase those devices: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uL0N3fkaD9pFemh42ttKGvJ0El6zaxr4wrC4BQOvqms/edit

What if I cannot afford a device?

For families who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program, their students will have a Chromebook provided for them. These families must check the box on the last page of the application that states, “Yes! I DO want school officials to share information from my Free and Reduced Price School Meals Application with other programs.” We will have a list of families that check this box and contact them in mid-August to coordinate the school-year lease and device pickup.

For families who do not qualify for free and reduced lunch, please take advantage of the Delafield Best Buy discounts and price matching.
