Some say gold and some say blue. Heres why you see what you see, from the guys at AsapSCIENCE.
This dress is all over social media. The world is divided about what color it is. Whats going on?
Its not a hoax. Some people really do see this dress as gold and white (like me!) and other see blue.
Every time they showed it on TV, I saw white/gold but pic in article, I see black/blue

the dress looks different on different devices. I've seen it both ways all over the web. In deference to the next post, however, I see the dark color as closer to brown than black.

(18,402 posts)I don't understand the big supposed mystery about this. It's a classic optical illusion (though I can't explain the science behind it).
When I first heard about this I thought I should take a look. So I found a website and the image (the half that I could see on my screen, because it was buried down in some text a bit) looked white with gold. I scrolled down to get the full image and accidentally went too far. This time, the dress was at the top of my screen, and it looked blue and black (or rather dark brown).
Hmmm, I thought: high-angle viewing, white/gold; low-angle viewing, blue-black.
I tested my hypothesis by centering the image and then raising myself up higher from my chair (I'm short), so that I was looking at a downward angle at the dress. It was white gold. Then I scrunched down, viewing it from below: blue/black.
I called my spouse in and showed him the image of the dress at the bottom of the screen. He was standing behind my desk, so of course he answered white and gold. I told him to get down to my level and pushed the image to the top of the screen. Blue/black.
Okay, only a test of two people. But try it yourself. It's a photographic phenomenon.
