OK, maybe not that long

Before Gov. Chris Christies administration abruptly settled long-running state environmental litigation against ExxonMobil for far less than originally expected, the oil behemoth donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to a Republican group that Christie ran and that financed his election campaigns. Additionally, the Christie administration office that engineered the settlement had been run by a former Exxon lawyer.
When the case was initiated in 2004, when Democrat James McGreevey was governor, New Jersey sought $8.9 billion in damages in a suit alleging that ExxonMobil damaged more than 1,500 acres of waterfront and meadows. Yet, according to documents reported on by the New York Times on Friday, the Christie administration is settling the suit for just $250 million. Based on ExxonMobil's 2014 revenue of $411.9 billion, it will take the company roughly 5 hours to generate the sales to pay out the settlement.
Federal records show that the reduction, which represents a huge gift to ExxonMobil, follows a wave of campaign cash from the company to the Christie-run Republican Governors Association.
Since Christie's first run for governor in 2009, ExxonMobil has donated more than $1.9 million to the group, according to data compiled by PoliticalMoneyLine.com. That includes $79,000 during Christies 2009 campaign and $200,000 during his re-election campaign in 2013. It also includes $500,000 when he chaired the organization during the 2014 election cycle.

Christie is just as much an oil whore as the Southern Senators who count on the oil industry to get them re-elected.

(2,419 posts)that this picture makes Christie look demented or maybe even like the evil clown from Stephen King's It-it's best not to dwell on looks. (although this picture really gets at his true character). This incident defines Christie in a nutshell-as well as Republican crony government in general. Consider:
1. Exxon contaminates (and contaminate is a mild word in this instance) 1,500 acres of environmentally valuable land in the course of making billions of dollars.
2. NJ institutes a lawsuit to recover damages from the polluter-estimating damages at around $8.9 billion.
3. After years of litigation, Exxon's liability in the lawsuit is established-leaving only the amount of damages in question.
4. Damages would include clean-up costs, compensatory mitigation lands, the value of the lands that were damaged, preventative measures to avoid future contamination and legal fees. These damages could easily be established in the billions of dollars.
BUT
1. Christie's former Attorney General (the one who dismissed the Hunterdon County Indictments) Paula Dow used to be an attorney for Exxon.
2. Former Christie DCA Commissioner and former Wolff & Sampson partner Lori Grifa is now a partner and lobbyist for Archer & Greiner-the law firm representing Exxon in this litigation.
3. Former Christie Deputy Chief of Staff Lou Goettner now works for Public Impact Strategies, the lobbying firm representing Exxon's interests in NJ.
4. Exxon donated $751,000 to the RGA in 2014 while Christie was in charge and nearly $1.8 million during the period of time Christie has been governor.
5. Public Impact Strategies donated $80,000 to the RGA.
6. Archer & Greiner donated $30,000 to the RGA.
7. Christie saw an opportunity for a quick infusion of cash into his ailing budget and a chance to reward his corporate benefactors.
SO
When it came to the interests of the people of NJ or the interests of Exxon-who do you think won out? This land will remain contaminated for generations to come, there will be no environmental mitigation or clean-up and Exxon only had to pay an amount of money equal to 5 HOURS of profit. This alone should be an impeachable offense for Christie, but we're more concerned with how fat he is or how funny he looks or how much he yells. They all make for enjoyable banter and funny memes but its really (as with most modern day Republicans) the corrosive and destructive policies and practices of his administration that really matters.

(2,419 posts)an appropriate settlement could have gone to stabilizing the pollution on the site, restoring historic wetlands and increasing public access to the waterfront on both Newark Bay and the harbor side of the peninsula with plenty of money left over to offset some of the impacts from Exxon's operations there. This was a complete sellout of NJ by our good governor.
I just have to add, Exxon can make all the donations they want. It takes an immoral and corrupt politician on the policy side to make it transactional. This entire mess lies at the feet of Christie and his disgusting band of creeps.

Which could be interpreted a few different ways, maybe the OP was thinking as in "toast" since that's what the chances of his nomination are. But then there was also this tasty sub-thread.
SMH, sometimes DU.
