Kirk won't be attending Spock's funeral

Shatner

A tearful William Shatner was spotted stepping off a flight just hours after the death of his fellow Star Trek actor and 'brother' Leonard Nimoy.

The distraught star, 83, who played Captain Kirk in the original series, was seen arriving at a Florida airport with his wife Elizabeth on Friday evening to attend the Red Cross ball.

It was the first time he had been seen in public since the death of his 83-year-old best friend who played Mr Spock in the sci-fi franchise.

The actor did not say anything to waiting reporters as he left the airport in a private car.

On Saturday, the morning after he touched down, he posted a devastated message on Twitter saying he would not be able to attend the funeral tomorrow.

He wrote: 'I am currently in FL [Florida] as I agreed to appear at the Red Cross Ball tonight. Leonard's funeral is tomorrow. I can't make it back in time.

'I feel really awful. Here I am doing charity work and one of my dearest friends is being buried.'

charitable works in Mr. Nimoy's life.

I think of it as more of an opportunity gained, rather than lost.

...to be there. He's obviously torn up over it, but a Jewish funeral can't wait and the ball can't be rescheduled.

However, it's very likely that Hollywood figures may throw a memorial service at a later date so that Nimoy's many colleagues can have a chance to eulogize him.

Change "won't be" (implies he would if he could but doesn't want to) to "can't," which is the situation.

I am assuming the funeral is taking place quickly due to Jewish traditions.

Shatner will likely make it to the unveiling ceremony where eulogies will be read.

The funeral might have to be quick, the unveiling makes it easier to assemble friends and family from all over the place.

I am sad knowing that Mr. Nimoy no longer shares this world with us, but the sadness accompanying the death of a celebrity doesn't plumb the depths of the devastating grief that accompanies the passing of a lifelong friend. I recognize Shatner's pain and loss. I feel for him.

there is no way this is not hitting him hard - Nimoy was his friend and they were only four days apart in age

never try to assess the grief of another - you just don't know, cannot know

I remember when Liz Taylor couldn't go to Richard Burton's grave for the longest time because the paparazzi had it staked out to get a shot of "grieving Liz" at Richard's grave. She pleaded with them to let her visit his grave alone, but they wouldn't do it, so she'd drive off.
