...saw this written on another thread (meant by the poster as some kind of insult) and I thought, 'I'm in!' One of the first things that attracted me to this site was the original writing on the front page by Nance and, I think, one or two other writers. The writing was always fresh, witty, and original. It was an enviable platform for political prose which she dominated with grace, humor, and candor.
I'm checking in as a proud member of the Nance Greggs Fan Club! Here's to the reappearance (however brief and rare) of one of DU's most prolific and entertaining writers! Don't change, Nance, and don't be such a stranger.

(50,986 posts)Nance has writing talent. We have had presidents who can't put one sentence together, let alone two, while Nance can do a full page of the most convincing sentences around.

(54,410 posts)To call someone's point of view "wrong" necessarily implies that you KNOW that another point of view is "right."
A point of view is something you agree or disagree with, an opinion. Knowing it is right or wrong is very absolute. "Two plus two equals five" is wrong. Saying you support Hillary/Elizabeth Warren/Bernie Sanders/The Great Pumpkin/Irving Takeyerpick in 2016 is a point of view, not something that is right or wrong.

ODS Obama Derangement Syndrome
If Obama makes a speech about a specific issue, hes just spewing pretty words. If Obama doesnt speak on a specific issue, hes trying to hide something. Or he should have spoken about something else entirely, because when he gets specific about one issue, that means hes ignoring all of the really important issues he should be speaking about those issues being whatever it was he didnt mention.
If Obama did it, it must have been the wrong thing to do. When it turns out to have been the right thing to do, then Obama never did it. And if he did do it, he did it the wrong way. It was too little, too late or it was too much, too soon. It went too far while, at the same time, it didnt go far enough. And even if it turns out to have been right, its still wrong.
If Obama proposed it, it cant possibly work. When it does work, it was somebody elses idea all along, an idea he blatantly stole just to make himself look good. Thats because he knew it would work all along even though it cant possibly work.
If Obama stands firm, he is being stubborn. If he seeks compromise, he is caving. Obama should lead while following. He should be more hands-on while staying out of it completely. Why cant he take the reins and do what must be done? Why cant he mind his own goddamned business?

(27,815 posts)Thank you so much for the kind words and thanks to all who have posted their kind words, as well.
I remember our skirmishes during the 2008 primaries. We were often on completely different sides of an issue but it never got personal, and we never lost sight of the fact that in the great scheme of things, we were all (Obama supporters, Edwards supporters, Hill supporters, etc.) on the same side the side of the Democratic Party, the side of wanting to see a fellow Democrat in the White House.
Just as an example of how things were then, three of the posters who I got into the most vehement arguments with during that time PMd me and I them constantly. Wed say things like, Good shot! I felt that one!, or, Have you read my reply to your last post? Thats gonna leave a mark! We joked about each others barbs, we laughed at each other, as well as at ourselves. It was understood by the vast majority of DUers that after the dust settled, we would all put our differences aside and get behind the nominee, whoever he or she turned out to be.
It is you, bigtree, who personifies what DU used to be all about. It was a place where posters could disagree with each others viewpoints without accusing each other of being authoritarians, DINOs, ConservaDems, Third Wayers, mindless cheerleaders and all of the other meaningless terms that now get thrown around here on a daily basis. It is people like YOU who made this site what it was in its best of days someone who understood that labelling those who held an opinion different than your own with such terms had only one aim: to be divisive ironically so on a website founded on the premise of Democrats, despite their differences, banding together for the common good.
It is posters like YOU who reminded us all that differences of opinion were not only to be expected under the Big Tent, but that it was that diversity of opinion that distinguished us from our opponents on the other side of the aisle.
So heres to you, bigtree and all of those many posters who, like you, understand that disagreeing with someone elses perspective should not be seen an opportunity for name-calling, but as a starting point for open, honest, and mutually respectful discussion.
My heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. I am truly grateful to each and every one of you for seeing me through such incredibly kind eyes.
bigtree
(85,998 posts)...of you to deflect praise back.
I meant every word I wrote, Nance. YOU are the ideal of what I've expected out of DU, out of our party. You never disappoint, even in disagreement. Thanks for the kind words, and soak up all of the love here from your fellow DUers. You're well worth this small expression of appreciation.

(5,815 posts)I won't let go the fact, the cause of her initial slinking away is when an overprivileged white woman tried to condescend to the LGBT community and tell them what they should and should not accept. Except we didn't have any truck with that and gave her a serious paddling. And off she slunk, like the unchallenged type she is.
I like Nance. She reminds me much of DU isn't particularly literate. Anyone who reads a book or two wouldn't be caught dead praising her stunning literary talent, so it's kind of like flashing a gang sign. "I have no idea what eloquence looks like!" And I always appreciate the heads up. People who don't actually read literature? Count the recs. That's them. Molly Ivins clone with a white lady living outside the US condescending to poor and underprivileged folk? The height of commentary!
Hilarious.
And I do get it. For years, Nance was kind of a head Mean Girl 'round these parts, and weak-willed individuals who want in on that crowd feel obligated to go full oral. By all means.
But still. Jee-sus. The fact anyone on DU thinks she's good at writing. L.O.L.
Try reading anything that isn't a blog for the love of god.

(85,998 posts)"much of DU isn't particularly literate," etc.
Such a bold and presumptuous contempt for the folks you're interacting with, it's no surprise to find you so put off by so many DUers posting about their ability to relate to Nance's writing - and relating to each other, as well.
A well-read fool is the most pestilent of blockheads; his learning is a flail which he knows not how to handle, and with which he breaks his neighbor's shins as well as his own. Keep a fellow of this description at arm's length, as you value the integrity of your bones. -Stanisław Leszczyński

NanceGreggs
(27,815 posts)... having been extremely "creative" in writing a history of events that never happened.
Given my lower middle-class origins and my life-long struggle to raise two kids on my own, I am rather surprised to learn that I am "an overprivileged white woman" - fancy that!
There was never a time when I "tried to condescend to the LGBT community and tell them what they should and should not accept" - but it is reminiscent of the time when members of Old Elm Tree (I think you're familiar with them) started spamming all of my OPs with allegations that I was a homophobe. When asked for any evidence thereof, the reply was always the same: "You know what you are, so I don't have to prove it." Given that I had written over twenty OPs by that time supporting gay rights, it seemed a rather silly charge. But they were charges made by silly people - so I wasn't expecting them to have the intellectual wherewithal to know that.
I didn't "slink off" as a result. I left DU when Skinner changed the TOS to allow "any and all criticism of Democrats" on this site - which resulted in RW trolls registering to spew their worst, under the guise of being "disappointed Dems" who were now free to bash Obama, Pelosi, Reid, et al without any interference.
As for my writing skills, I have never found them to be particularly noteworthy. However, my articles have been reprinted on many, many websites and in US newspapers, and have been read on-air by the likes of Stephanie Miller and Thom Hartmann among others. I was also approached by a literary agent in NYC about writing a book - an offer I declined, knowing that such an undertaking requires skill and discipline that I admittedly do not have.
I only raise these facts because I doubt that all of the people who have enjoyed my articles, read them on their programs, or reproduced them elsewhere are people who have never "read a book or two".
"She reminds me much of DU isn't particularly literate." "People who don't actually read literature? Count the recs. That's them." Nice! So everyone who has ever rec'd one of my OPs is basically illiterate, and have never read literature - I'm sure you just endeared yourself to a hell of a lot of people who post here. Way to go.
Quite frankly, your entire post smacks of unbridled jealousy, and a rather pathetic need to bring attention to yourself. And that is incredibly sad.

(14,174 posts)Even though we've had our spats lately. And if I've ever gone over the line, I'm sorry. She's a brilliant writer and basically was one of reasons I joined up on DU in the first place. Her witty evisceration of BushCo. during those dark ages was a treat to read.
So confused about her seeming paranoia of whistleblowers and those that report on them. Not sure why she is so vehemently against those that want to expose secret unconstitutional, criminal behavior by those in power. Not to get into it on this thread, just to say I am perplexed after reading all those courageous OPs against government overreach during the Bush years. But I appreciate that she at least takes time to explain her reasons in detailed intelligent language instead of some others on here that resort to one-sentence shallow derogatory insults against those two individuals, which says more about them.
But I believe she has her heart in the right place as most all of us do, and agree on most all Democratic principles, just in differing lights. And I also believe we can argue about issues and still sit under the same tent and share a cup of tea.
