Your picture looks like my yard.
Imagine what is going to happen when all this snow melts. We will be washed away. Sump pumps at the ready.

Having great weather, but looks like another dry year for us. SF bay area didn't get a drop of rain in January, which is normally one of the few months we get most of our water.

Best of luck to everyone of you dealing with all the snow.

after he cuts his wood for the winter, he anchors a 20 ft. ladder to the pile. when the snows come, he has to dig down to find his ladder

then dig a whole lot more....keep warm

We landed near it in a ski plane, trudged over in snow shoes to this pole sticking out of the snow and dug down to the roof hatch.

I can't imagine how horrific people's heating bills are back there for this wicked winter month. Boston, to me, has always meant cold and snow in the winter, but not nine feet of it in three weeks. I read that there have been at least 119 home roof collapses in your area last week; even a barn caved in, killing horses, and rescuing the surviving ones was a brutal task for the first-responders.

There was an article by one of our Seattle/Washington meteorologists, back about two blizzards ago, relating that Boston had received more snow than one of our Cascade Mountain passes. The snowpack we've gotten this winter is non-existent, water managers are sounding the alarm and forest firefighters are already freaking. We've now had the warmest winter on record out here.

Such extremes are mind-boggling.

Keep your little family warm, Will, and thanks for sharing what you're experiencing. A heavy task, for sure.

It's a balmy 39 today. It's going to be 12 tomorrow, and -14 tomorrow night. The fluctuation today is deranging the wood furnace, but the snow on the roof is melting, and that's very helpful.

I spoke with my brother down in Ohio on Friday and the high there had only gotten up to three or four above....night before had been down to -9. He told me that they were expecting a minor warm-up this weekend, but then another storm was on the way. He couldn't remember the last time it'd been above freezing.

Are you hoping for a gradual thaw? Where in the world is all that water gonna go once the snow melts?

As for the water, it will run down the hill into the lake...and turn our dirt road into a quagmire disaster. Mud season in March is worse than winter. But then, wildflowers, and all is forgiven.

I finally got hold of my brother and he says wind-chill there in Ohio is predicted to be in the negative teens/twenties tonight. Record breaking dangerous highs and lows for the Ohio Valley, Upper Midwest, and Northeast regions of the US, the whole week long.

(He's been out shoveling all weekend, too, and Ohio has gotten nothing like the snow that's fallen in New England)

Stay safe and keep little Lola warm! (my girl's second winter on this earth was also a frigid/blizzard kind of winter and to this day, she swears that she can remember it!)

It means that our heat isn't escaping and melting that stuff. Of course, when it all melts our 1 mile dirt road will be a treat.

Still, I'd rather have this than be stuck in Boston or NYC. And I'd rather be dead than be stuck below the Mason-Dixon, no matter the temperature.

At least you had the foresight to throw a tarp over that pile. For some reason, I just never thought of it and had to put the next logs under the stove to warm up and dry out when I got them inside. There was always a cat I had to dislodge and send up to the loft, which meant said cat gave me dirty looks for the rest of the day.

it got so balmy today I took off the third layer of clothing I've been wearing around the house for the past few weeks. Unfortunately, tomorrow the high temperature is supposed to be back at 13. Back to the fleece on top of sweats on top of long underwear. (No, it's not a pretty sight. LOL.)

It can be tedious when the snow is higher than the intake, but it beats shoveling it.
