By not letting people without cable watch their shows online. You'd think they would want to appeal to the younger generation who use the internet to view content as well as we old fogies who have eschewed cable. They can still get commercial revenues as other online providers do. Pretty stupid on their part.

(4,644 posts)Most "cordcutters" use any excuse for piracy. They don't want bundled cable TV, they do not want commercials, they want to watch at a different time, they want it on their phone. So most download or stream (illegally). There are ways to get all these demands met legally but then they claim those options are to restricting.
They use torrent to download and/or one of hundreds of XBMC and/or Plex plugins to stream content without paying for anything

No cordcutter has a nielsen box so MSNBC is not losing ratings to them, The other news networks have seen a decline too but no where near has much as MSNBC
One of the issues MSNBC has is that 5-6 shows each day all cover the same stories, people get tired of hearing about the same topics with the same guests over and over. MSNBC seems to be worse on this issue than other news channels.
But all news channels have an inherent flaw that Raising Hope sums up great

(33,032 posts)I get the commercial perfectly but no content otherwise. Thanks for trying though.
Supposedly there's a way to get special online content but it doesn't seem to be the actual shows.

(23,156 posts)You can watch at least some of the shows on MSNBC a couple of hours after they are broadcast live. That's how I watch Rachel every night.
Offhand, I'm not aware of any networks that stream content live, other than when TV stations go to live streaming when covering breaking news.
I can't imagine why a link that works for me isn't working for someone else, unless you have some kind of blocking software that's interfering.

(172 posts)A few of the shows have video downloads (podcasts) that don't require a subscription- namely Rachel Maddow and Morning Joe. They are typically posted about 3 hours after the show airs, and they are in low resolution. The Morning Joe podcast is being discontinued at the end of this month. The same thing may happen to Rachel's show soon.

I agree with the OP that it's a bad move if they're just going to continue with the cable TV package deal. I don't want to pay $100/month just to watch a few shows. I'm 31 but that's true of more and more people of any age.

(115,747 posts)So that's not the problem. The problem is that management has been diluting the quality of the programming. I haven't watched MSNBC in months because it just isn't very interesting any more. Maddow is OK; the rest of the shows are a huge yawn.

(641 posts)When I watch Ed I get the feeling he has his hands tied behind his back. It must be very frustrating for him. Remember when Keith used to let it all out - no holds barred. 2008 was the top of the mountain for MSNBC. Gone downhill since Keith quit.

(641 posts)but not for the no-online reason. The shows are just becoming dull and boring (most likely because of censorship by Griffin & the GOPboys). I've gravitated to CNN and Al Jazeera (amazingly I can even tolerate the Wolf-man).

(34,136 posts)Almost every show in the afternoon and evening has five to ten minutes of the current crop of crazy clown idiocy. I don't want to want watch those whack jobs ever - if I did I would be watching Faux Noise. If I want to know what they are saying, I come to DU where I can read selected quotes and not have to listen to their annoying voices or look at their crazy eyes.
Whenever MSNBC puts those right wing nuts on their programs, I change the channel. Usually I get involved in some other programming and don't turn back to MSNBC for hours. I used to watch All In, Rachel Maddow, and Lawrence O'Donnell regularly - now I watch other programming almost every night.

(50,130 posts)...and I used to be a faithful viewer. I might watch Ari Melber if he gets a show. The others are no longer a draw for me.
If MSNBC moved farther left, I would be more likely to watch.

(18,634 posts)I love her views, they are very observant and well researched, but if her whole show wasn't available online I wouldn't watch it at all.
That's all I watch on MSNBC.
