Bill O’Reilly is super mad at Mother Jones — here’s why

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly angrily denounced a Mother Jones report on Thursday questioning his statements regarding his reporting during the Falklands War in 1982.
“It’s a hit piece,” O’Reilly told Politico. “Everything I said about what I reported in South and Central America is true. Everything.”
The report from Mother Jones‘ Washington bureau chief David Corn highlighted discrepancies between O’Reilly’s description of his experiences in Argentina in a 2001 book and several public statements regarding his time there.
In the book, Corn stated, O’Reilly says he was reporting for CBS News in Buenos Aires — more than 1,000 miles from the actual warzone — when he was “right in the middle” of a major riot that caused several fatalities. The riot, which was widely reported, followed Argentina’s surrender to United Kingdom forces in July 1982, ending the Falklands conflict. O’Reilly says a soldier aimed his weapon toward him, and that he and other journalists were tear-gassed and attacked before he escaped the scene.
“I managed to make it back to the Sheraton with the best news footage I have ever seen,” O’Reilly wrote. “This was major violence up close and personal, and it was an important international story.”

On Thursday, O’Reilly called Corn a “despicable guttersnipe” and said he never claimed to have been on the islands.
“It was clear that I did not say I was in the Falkland Islands,” he told Politico. “I’ve done myriad interviews over the years and I never said that.”

David Corn hits back at Bill O'Reilly
"To me, the issue here is whether a media figure and journalist like Bill O'Reilly, who claims to be a truth teller, can get away without answering questions about specific statements he's made, and hide behind name calling," Corn told the On Media blog on Thursday. "I would encourage anyone else who covers this story to get Bill O'Reilly to answer those quesitons -- if not to me, than to anyone else."

Mother Jones also said O’Reilly exaggerated the violence he saw when reporting from El Salvador during its civil war in 1982. O’Reilly stated in his book that he visited a village that had been “leveled to the ground”, and there was no one “alive or dead”. But in a 90-second report for CBS News, residents could be seen walking around amid a handful of burned-out structures.
O’Reilly responded: “Everything I reported was true.”
Corn, the Mother Jones co-author, said he had attempted to reach O’Reilly before publication of the story on several occasions.
“O’Reilly more than once said he was in a war zone. But the war was on an island. It was not in Buenos Aires. It’s like saying you were in a war zone during the Vietnam War because you were in Washington,” he said.

Billo first encountered Guttersnipes in the wilds of Vietnam. 
During the '12 campaign I scuttled Morning Schmo and did what I never thought, which was to switch to sLIMUS, and as despicable as he is, I thoroughly enjoyed his Huck FINN cunning in setting up, then picking off, his guests. So O'LOOFAH was phoning-in one of his first Killing dollars things, and he was a frequent guest. So sLIMUS did the much grinded set-up, where he butters up the Target, then zeros in with ever more particular questions, until he finally STICKS the harpoon in. I had heard the story before about how O'LOOFAH had been "big footed" at CBS by Bob SCHIEFFER: O'LOOFAH had claimed that he had done all the heavy duty leg work on a supposedly HUGH!1 story in the Falklands when he was an unknown reporter and had thought that this would be his big break for major air time on the evening news, but the suits ruled that a story that big called for a bigger name, so SCHIEFFER was flown in to read the report for the camera. So, this many years later, sLIMUS led O'LOOFAH on about reporting/whatever and O'LOOFAH was gobbling up the bait, albeit with his trace of paranoia that something was up. So, out of nowhere sLIMUS said (paraphrasing), "Did you hear how Bob SCHIEFFER got his start on the network?" O'LOOFAH closed down, "No." So sLIMUS rambled on, "innocently," telling how SCHIEFFER had answered the phone at the Dallas newsroom during the chaos when OSWALD was being chased, and it was OSWALD's mother on the phone asking for a ride to his apartment, and SCHIEFFER was in the right place at the right time and picked he up and afterward this was his career-making move. Throughout all the telling, O'LOOFAH was deathly silent, his suspicions of being sandbagged validated.
Anyway, O'LOOFAH has gotten away for decades with his name calling others with the "smear merchanting" he himself does, using racists terms like "wetbacks" while pretending it's a lack of foreign language knowledge, and calling himself a war correspondent. But it's good enough for the VFW.

Bill O'Reilly says a new Mother Jones report alleging that the Fox News host made false claims about his Falklands War experience is "a piece of garbage" and that its principal author, David Corn, is "a liar."
In a telephone interview with the On Media blog, O'Reilly called Corn a "despicable guttersnipe" who has been trying to take him down "for years."
