Most of the editorial staff of the Tea Party News Network resigned this afternoon following a Daily Beast exposé on the website’s desperate efforts to generate traffic. TPNN began in 2012 to give voice to the conservative grassroots and quickly grew a mass following among tea partiers, even scoring interviews with major figures in GOP. But shady business practices that blurred the line between the company’s non-profit political wing and its for-profit news wing—as well as increased reliance on fight porn—led to nearly the entire staff quitting Thursday. “The audience is regarded as unsophisticated simpletons," read the resignation letter to the site’s owner, Todd Cefaratti. "The activism that built all of the infrastructure is considered ‘a pain in the ass,’ not as an opportunity to save the country. As a group we can no longer tolerate being associated with these despicable practices.”

One post shows a large man getting into a fight at a U.K. restaurant with a young woman. After she slaps him, he punches her through a floor-to-ceiling window. “Did the Big guy go too far or do you think the girl got what she deserved?” a subheadline on the post asks. The headline of another post reads: “VIDEO: Cowardly Sucker Punch Kills Autistic Man.”

The stories, such as they are, are just the latest evidence of what fans of the site say is an increasing turn toward the lurid.

they have to know that the tea party could also be called the talk radio party or the limbaugh party.

when rove lost the white house he lost control of the talk radio propaganda operation. in their minds partly due to limbaugh forcing mccain to pick palin instead of pawlenty or the lieberman traitor. limbaugh wouldn't endorse mccain, which would have been a major disaster for the convention, so mccain chose palin minutes before the start of limbaugh's show on the friday before the GOP convention and limbaugh got to make the national announcement to the pre-teabaggers.

the talk radio coordination and management vacuum had to be filled and the koch think tanks shoved rove's invisible but effective army and made-to-order constituency of back seat loons out into the public to stop the public option merely by giving a bunch of limbaugh/hannity/savage dittoheads free bus passes to town hall events. it worked just like it had been for 2 decades on many issues and swiftboating but this time they were out in the open and feeling their oats, and they could no longer be controlled as well as before.

this is the culmination of 25 years of the left giving talk radio a free speech free ride. liberals and dems still vastly underestimate the importance of republicon radio and will continue to lose many elections, get our asses kicked in national and local messaging, and continue to lose big and be forced to compromise on major reform of any kind. it is why we still have a major party that can do global warming denial.

the time we've lost on that alone makes ignoring rw radio the biggest political mistake in history.
