To those that suggest the person that occupies the White House doesn't matter tell that to
-my Latino brothers and sisters who now face deportation because a Bush judge has found President Obama's amnesty plan to be unconstitutional.
-my gay brothers and sisters who can now marry the person they love because four Clinton and Obama appointees found that right in the Constitution.
-my working class and poor brothers and sisters who can now get Medicaid because Lyndon Johnson started the program and Barack Obama expanded it to include single indigent adults.
Lord, protect me from my friends. I can handle my enemies.

(25,026 posts)that will continue to entrench global corporate domination, to codify the counter constitutional surveillance state, the plundering of our habitat, the looting of the commons, the assaults on public education, the embrace of demonstrably failed voodoo economics and austerity politics, the disdain for the poor, the seeming hatred of the homeless,, the shunning of labor, complete disregard for the water supply, continuing and expanding forever war, the strip mining the the Bill of Rights, the enrichment of the wealthy, constant efforts toward treason against or sovereignty, and the insane pursuit of military and clandestine adventurisim and imperialistic world wide meddling.
I 100% agree it matter profoundly.

(20,277 posts)I think that it may be more important who has Congress and the Senate also.

(231 posts)The Supreme Court appointment of George W. Bush to the Presidency in 2000 made a huge difference in the lives of tens or hundreds of thousands or Iraqis -- by ending those lives. I have no doubt that war would never have happened if the man who actually won the election had been able to take office.
I have no patience with the "Oh I don't vote...they're all the same" crowd.

Cynicism only goes so far.

(3,891 posts)Instead of Tar Sands Oil being shipped via a pipeline owned by the Koch Brothers, it's shipped on rail cars owned by Warren Buffet, which is way better for our side because of donations to our candidates.
Instead of Haliburton making tons of money on no bid contracts, we now have one of our Companies making the same money on no bid contracts and thus repaying our donors instead of their donors. You see, our Billionaires are way better than their Billionaires. Bill Gates is awesome now that he talks about minimum wages and things like that. Of course, it means we have to forget that he was sued by the Justice Department under Bill Clinton for violations of the prohibitions against Monopoly business environments. You remember that one, where Attorney General Janet Reno admitted that the legal documents filed had been written in Microsoft Word?
Warren Buffett is an awesome rich guy who earned his money. He is always out there saying he should be taxed more. For some reason he hasn't fired the dozens of tax attorneys and hundreds of accountants that he employs to make sure that he pays not one dime of taxes more than he absolutely has to. It doesn't matter, because he says he should be taxed more, and he donates to OUR side, so that is all that matters.
I could go on, and on, and on. For a vast majority of the people, it doesn't really matter who is control. Economics rules their every day life. They are poor, and it doesn't matter to them who's supporters get what no bid contract. While Warren Buffet says that he want's to oppose the pipeline due to environmental reasons, he still has thousands of railroad cars filled to the brim with tar sands oil in motion every single day. But he wraps his story in environmental arguments, so we like him.
In far too many ways, picking a candidate is nothing more than picking the rich guy backing them. For Clinton, it's the rich folks behind Berkshire Hathaway, Goldman Sachs, and similar groups. But at least while we are handing the country over to them, we are keeping it out of the hands of the Koch Brothers. Fucking rich assholes who think they can buy the country. We showed you, we made sure that Warren Buffett and Goldman Sachs' bought it. Ha ha ha. Oh wait a minute, shit.

(99,710 posts)It matters to the millions of indigent adults who can now get Medicaid or its state equivalent because of the Affordable Care Act. It matters to the people who can now marry the person they love regardless of their gender. It matters to the undocumented workers who will now have to go back to living in the shadows because a Bush judge invalidated President Obama's executive amnesty order.
These issues are only trivial to those not affected by them.

And who have the privilege of mitching and moaning for "purity" candidates who have said, countless times, that they're not running or who do not have a snowball's chance in Hades to even get a campaign off the ground. They don't see (or maybe they don't care) that the policies of that "Republican-lite" Obama stand in stark difference to any Republican president. For years, their hatred of his impurities as a Liberal had them pontificate endlessly to the point people began to wonder if it had more to do with his skin color rather than his policies. Now I believe it's because they're struck with the same affliction as Teabaggers: political myopia.
