This is my road.
Thanks, winter. We've had enough now.

You Yankees are a sturdy crew. At -28°, being the delicate hot-house flower of the Californian that I am, I would be hunkered down at the bottom of the bed shivering under the quilts. Very pretty snow, though, in your picture!

(28,498 posts)Theres no question that sledding can be dangerous. Kidsnot known for their stellar judgmentare given carte blanche to fly down steep icy hills on flimsy contraptions they cant steer or stop. They careen at more than 20 miles per houras fast as carsyet they dont have the protection of thick metal frames, or air bags, or seat belts. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that approximately 10,000 sledding-related injuries in children under the age of 14 were treated in hospital emergency departments in 2012.
Thats a lot. But by comparison, consider that trampolines caused nearly 79,000 ER-worthy injuries in kids under 14 in 2012, and television sets caused 26,000. (That doesnt include the permanent hearing loss kids got from watching Dora the Explorer.) Sledding becomes much less dangerous when its done a certain way, tooand thats precisely why these park sledding bans are a problem: Open spaces such as parks are among the safest places for kids to sled. One study found that the odds of going to the ER for sledding injuries were five times higher in children who had been sledding on the street compared with in the park.* Injuries sustained while street sledding are often much worse, too, and are more likely to involve traumatic brain injuries. But where are kids without big backyards going to sled if they cant do it in the park? The street, of course.

Our last really good snow here in Normandy was 2 winters ago. My husband tells me it used to reliably snow every winter, but that was before climate change. Today, it's 46°, unseasonably hot for mid-February. We had a few snow flurries last week which stayed on the ground for about 30 minutes. Still, it could still snow in March, even April - it's too early to call it.
Anyway, here are some photos of the 2012/2013 snow.

(3,496 posts)That's Caen, the capital city of the department of Calvados, in Lower Normandy region.
The castle walls that you see in the background were constructed in 1060 by Guillaume II, Duke of Normandy. This region predates the French nation (i.e. before the idea of nations existed, we had kingdoms). The Normandy Duchy was ceded in 911 to the the Viking Chief, Rollon, by Charles le Simple, King of the Francs, in order to end the continual Viking ((Nor-man) raids on Frankish territory.
Guillaume II, great-great grandson of Rollon, went on to conquer the Kingdom of England in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings, (as all we English speakers already know ) after which he became known as William the Conqueror, King of England, Duke of Normandy. When you see a golden Lion on the Royal Arms, (Robin Hood movie with Russel Crow) it's because the English crown could claim Normandy through William the Conqueror.
Besides the medieval history of the city, there is the WWII history of the city, but I'll stop myself there. Sorry if this was too much Here's a link if you like : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caen

As the Northeast continues to freeze under snowy, stormy, and blustery conditions, the tourism bureau of Ithaca, New York, has conceded defeat, urging potential visitors to go to Florida instead.
VisitIthaca.com, the tourism website run by the Ithaca Convention & Visitors Bureau, recently added a pop-up window to its site, telling visitors that due to this ridiculously stupid weather, they should consider foregoing a trip to Ithaca, where sub-zero temperatures are expected this week. Instead, the website urges, go to the Florida Keys.

(6,446 posts)not Boston. The lake effect is a monstrous blowhard. Snow there is ridiculous sometimes. I was in a whiteout once where i LITERALLY couldn't see my outstretched hand in front of my face at 1PM. Nothing but white, weird loud but soundless blowing in all directions at once WHITE. No matter how bad it gets here in WMass, it doesn't quite compare to Buffalo.
BTW, in my College years there, we made many an outdoor beer cave...

Starting around Christmas of 2006, the front range got hit with a series of snow storms over six weeks, that left some areas with as much as 80" of snow. A friend saw this in Denver & captured it.
Happy digging.

Feels like So. California to me. It's suppose to get well below freezing every night. Heck, it hasn't been cold enough here to freeze, except for a few days in January. WTF is up with our weather??? No snow. No rain, just dry and sunny. Every year it gets worse!
It's as though the winter cold has moved north about 400 miles.

(50,303 posts)We have the standard double hung windows on the first floor and the snow is almost covering the bottom pane entirely. I've had it with winter. Reeeeeeeeeeally had it. Yesterday I was weighing the options of living in a warmer climate vs. New Hampshire. After thinking about hurricanes and tornadoes and flooding, mud slides and forest fires . . . and red state Republicans . . . I've decided it's best to crawl back under the electric blanket until it goes away.

Ergo, this winter is probably karma kicking me in the ass.
