'Sovereign citizen' sign in car window doesn't ward off ticket for driver

An Omaha resident unsuccessfully tried to avoid licensing his car by claiming he is “a traveler moving freely throughout the United States.”

A 42-year-old man made that argument during a traffic stop for failure to display license plates Feb. 10 near 50th and Ohio Streets, according to an Omaha Police Department report. A sign in the rear window of the car, which hadn’t been licensed since 2011, claimed the owner had special status as a “sovereign citizen.”

The driver twice refused to sign the traffic ticket for failure to license the car, pay the wheel tax and having no operator’s license. He was taken to the Douglas County Jail and his car was impounded.

A 30-year-old male passenger was also arrested for a misdemeanor warrant and being in possession of drug paraphernalia.

anything because the "rules" so not apply to them. i've watched my neighbor switch outdated plates on his dump trailer with his pickup every time he goes to the dump.

6. Pretty sure they would still have impounded the car as they wouldn't have allowed him to keep

with the billions of dollars from the Koch-addicted GOP, these people are being fed more and more and are becoming more and more a part of the national face of the new GOP

10. It is my opinion that "sovereign citizen" should be a fully legal status. Seriously.

Free from any government interference like taxes, regulations, laws, police, lawyers, legal courts, fire department, security inspections, roads, a regulated banking-system, patented forms of medical treatment, public pension-plans, the right to vote...

In other words: They would be "free as a bird".

He told the judge that the judge had no jurisdiction over him since he was a "sovereign citizen"
The judge told him that he had all the time to think that idea over in his cell because he was not going to grant bail.
Three months later when he came to court for his trial he was a bit more contrite. Didn't help him much-he still got a year-minus the three months already served.
