First Read: In our experience, theres a simple rule to follow to make sense of any shutdown showdown: The side thats divided usually loses. And Republicans are the ones who are divided in the battle over funding the Department of Homeland Security over whether or not to include riders overturning Obamas executive actions on immigration.Playing politics with security is always problematic. But its doubly problematic when your party is divided.

(30,058 posts)What about the clause to stop Obama's executive order on immigration when that failed to produce an immigration bill. The failure still points to the Republicans.

(36,063 posts)Wisconsin had pretty even alternation of parties in the governors mansion until the elections were changed to occur in off-years from the presidential election.
Enough dems don't do the off-year elections to give the r's an advantage.

(7,412 posts)Didn't hurt them in 2014, statewide races like the Senate and Governor were a fairly successful venture for them. It makes their base happy anyway and that's the turnout that helps them when Democrats are lackadaisical.
