Miss. Rep. Opposes More School Funding Because 'Welfare Crazy Checks' For 'Blacks' Don't Work

Mississippi state Rep. Gene Alday (R) said recently that he opposes increases in education funding, citing "crazy welfare checks" that he doesn't think benefit the state.

"I don’t see any schools hurting," Alday (pictured on the right) said in an interview with the Clarion-Ledger highlighted by ThinkProgress. "The people are electing superintendents that don’t know anything about education."

"I come from a town where all the blacks are getting food stamps and what I call 'welfare crazy checks.' They don’t work," he continued.

The state lawmaker then complained that he recently had a long wait in a hospital emergency room. "I laid in there for hours because they (blacks) were in there being treated for gunshots," he said.

1. Mississippi

Return on Taxpayer Investment: $3.07
Funding as Percentage of Revenue: 45.8 percent
Federal Employees Per Capita: 8.67

Along with its neighbors Louisiana and Alabama, Mississippi is heavily assisted with federal dollars. So much so that WalletHub’s calculations place them at the top of the list for the most dependent on Washington for subsistence. Mississippi suffers from some serious socio-economic issues, including having the highest poverty rate and one of the lowest income rates in the country.

These are problems that have plagued the state for a long time, and there doesn’t appear to be any hope for change in the near future. There are a few things that capture federal funding that add to the state’s total, including several military bases, but the major issue appears to be the lack of jobs and opportunity suffered by the state’s citizens.

At the link, it will give the top ten States that rely heavily on Big Gubmint in order to survive - and it's no secret that Republican-dominated States dominate the top ten Welfare State list.

I wish we could fire congresscritters for spreading vicious stereotypes like this.

Ultimately these lies have domino effects in actions: not just in votes, but in everyday prejudices that adversely affect the lives of poor people and make it harder for them to change their situation.

Ps. I wonder if he was in the ER for anything he could have avoided through his own behavior changes...

"Thank God for Mississippi!"

They will always be No. 1 or No. 50 on the crazies lists (except for teacher/student sex, of course).

Is this list for "Most Racist Elected Officials?"

And they don't have same-sex marriage -- how freaking backwards can you get?

Arizona is already behind Mississippi in per-student spending and more cuts are coming!

We've got a new GOP governor and a GOP super-majority, so every crazy-ass tea-bagger wish is their command.

to hear from so many people like him who...

Really don't know what the hell they are talking about!!!

When you express personal opinion as a matter of law or concerning funding, you should lose all credulity. Well, you do, but that does not seem to matter.

What generalizing. White or black, whoever had gunshot wounds probably came out on top in triage over whatever was wrong with him. These people getting into state legislatures when they are this dumb is astounding.

there's no fucking reason for Democrats to come and vote, because "both parties are just the fucking same"

Ya' know, maybe we couldn't beat this asshat in is fucking racist ass district, but we sure as hell could help make sure he's NOT IN THE FUCKING MAJORITY!!!!!

Fuck to hell anyone who dares to say we shouldn't vote FOR ANY FUCKING DEMOCRAT!!!!!

This kind of shit shows us that the worst fucking Democrat in the world is still 10 times more preferable that a Repuke!

Any DUer who comes on here to tell us how Hillary is just a "corporatist" or that a particular Democrat isn't "purely liberal" enough, ought to be fucking banned from DU for life!

in Mississippi. I hear it often and I live on the West coast.

People like Alday though are emboldened by their ignorant & bigoted supporters to say it out loud. They are just repeating what fox tells them is real. Until we have Democrats that stand up and point out the hypocrisy and hatred coming from the right, people like Alday will carry on their campaign of meanness, racism and ignorance.

Let's see - I call Brian Williams all over the place on this BS.

"Long waits for medical care" (anti Obamacare trope) + "they" were being treated for gun shots (are their rashes shootings in Walls, Missisippi? He states this as if it occurred more than once... hmmmm He says this in an interview with the Clarion Ledger - I wish a local reporter would follow up.)

education funding = welfare checks (? aside from pure racist bs this doesn't even make sense)

"all the blacks" welfare + foodstamps + lazy/don't work (racist + anti social network tropes)

This interview reads like he is campaigning for a Grand Dragon (or is that Grand Wizard) position.
