(45,274 posts)Sometimes My Favorite Wingnut sends me links to right-wing pieces & I sometimes look--for about the same reason that people gawk at accidents, so I see all the other headlines, and I end up thinking, "If people believe THIS, it's fuckin' all over."
Then I remember that most people actually don't buy into this shit. Most people are compassionate and of good will, do in fact believe in climate change, know about the growing inequality, etc. The wingnuts really are a minority.

(32,882 posts)Corporate America wants to keep it that way. These people are stupid enough to vote for continuing to screw themselves financially to benefit the 80 people that own more wealth than 3 billion of us.

(42,641 posts)they have to shout all the louder to be heard.
Witness the desperate cries for attention from Sarah Palin,
the pathetic attempts to excuse war crimes from Dick Cheney,
and on and on.
The only thing that helps them is Faux News with their 24/7 hate speech

(14,567 posts)I am in a service club, probably a handful of 40+ members are democrats, or at least not republican/"conservative."
GOOD people, people who have done so much for the community, volunteer their time and give their money. Ethical, decent. Great friends.
And, they absolutely lap republican bullshit up like popcorn.
I don't get it, and I have stopped trying.
I have my share of non "conservative" friends, but honestly, more people than not where I live are "conservative" or buy more of the republican nonsense than not.

(2,382 posts)... is a seething furnace of malice. There is a mutant strain of the species that is congenitally incapable of discerning the truth, let alone telling it. Those that spew such verbal vomit crave attention and dominion over the lives of others. Those that wallow in it are desperate for some drama in their dreary, double-wide lives, and embrace outrageous positions out of inbred stupidity and a perverse desire to stand out from the herd. Since they lack the intelligence to distinguish themselves by their accomplishments, they draw attention to themselves with... this.
Beck and his malignant ilk prey on the ignorance and inchoate resentment of the lowest common denominators of the social equation for their own self-aggrandizement and enrichment. No decent people will ever mourn their passing.

(8,020 posts)... RWNJ poster on my local newspaper discussion boards pointed out to me after I ripped him a new one on how stupid many of their politicians are....
"If we're so stupid, how come we are in control of both Houses of Congress?"
He has a point. How did control of both Houses pass to the truly mentally deficient?
I know I'm old and cynical, but .... WTF is happening? Has this country taken leave of its collective senses?

Another major reasion is that each state - no matter how many people it has in its population - has two Senators. In fact, Dem Senators got WAY more votes than GOP Senators did. http://politicalwire.com/2015/01/03/democratic-senators-got-more-votes-than-republicans/
Don't give up completely on all your neighbors and friends or American voters in general.
Our system was deliberately rigged against real democracy from the get-go. It has been made worse since 1980 by GOP legislatures and governors who had control of the redistricting process. One cannot just pay attention to national elections.
Now Citizens United and decisions like it created full-blown oligarchy.

(33,688 posts)Pierces Axioms of Idiot America
1. Any theory is valid if it sells books, soaks up ratings, or otherwise moves units.
2. Anything can be true if someone says it loudly enough.
3. Fact is that which enough people believe. Truth is determined by how fervently they believe it.
iMO this simple set of rules explains very nearly everything wrong with the sad mess called the USA. We are, collectively dumb as a box of rocks, partly by choice, partly by manipulation.
