SC Senator: Women Are “A Lesser Cut Of Meat”

A discussion over a pending criminal domestic violence (CDV) bill took a bizarre turn this week when S.C. Senator Thomas Corbin – a “Republican” from Travelers Rest, S.C. – offered some bizarrely sexist commentary on the role of women in the political process.

...snip...

At one point in the conversation – which quickly escalated into a confrontation – Shealy is said to have angrily asked Corbin where he “got off” attacking women.

His response – overheard by numerous lobbyists and fellow lawmakers – was one for the ages.

“Well, you know God created man first,” Corbin said, reportedly smirking at Shealy. “Then he took the rib out of man to make woman. And you know, a rib is a lesser cut of meat.”

I am asking because my daughter just moved to South Carolina from the crazy state and I think it is the first time in her life she has faced sexual harassment.

A coworker told her that he was going to have to call her husband to straighten her out.

She didn't know what to do, I told her, I would have dialed the number and handed him the phone.

Her husband is a manager for the same company different department.

Their daddy hid behind bigotry and so did their grand daddy and great grand daddy. From what I've learned growing up in South Texas, these men are scared of women and detest change.

it is true. Racism, bigotry and sexism is standard practice and people often look the other way. Women were subjugated and father has handed that down to son. I do not say this flippantly. There are exceptions to the rule. The governor is a woman. I know it's hard and ridiculous to believe. There are people there who have ancestors who fought in the War Between the States and they are still pissed that their relatives were humiliated by the Union. I left there years ago but still have relatives there. I visit occasionally but I can only tolerate it for short periods. Again there are great people there but I have memories of the 50's, 60's and beyond that I cannot get out of my mind. I'm sure others will having glowing reviews of the State.

His attitudes, his expressed world view during campaigns, whatever he says or does - obviously that resonates with a certain population sample that lives on the bottom of the social cesspool. His supporters obviously like and support shit like this. THAT is what troubles me most - that there are voters out there who are okay with this kind of crap, and want to elevate it into elected office.

But then again, there's a part of me that would stay silent and hope he keeps mouthing off like this. HEY DEMS - THIS IS AMMO FOR YOU!!!! USE IT!!!!!!

I deeply resent this king of thing, but on the other hand, I very much enjoy another display by yet another in a continuing series of utter Troglodyte republi-CONS. Sometimes they're their own worst enemies. Which generates a LOT of useful material for our tribe. That's one reason why I actually am toying with the idea of contributing to mike huckabooboo's campaign. I want those Bronze Age schmucks out front, making all kinds of lovely noise in public that's going to alienate more voters than it pleases. I like that A LOT!

If they're busy digging themselves deeper into a hole, I want to be there to offer LOTS of encouragement.

I worked there for 6 years. Worked with a lot of nice people and had 2 great bosses, but the leadership of the State are ad have always been A-Hats! I remember when I was first transferred there from PA. I took a ride to downtown Greenville on a Sunday just to see what it was like. I was the ONLY car on the road and ever store was closed. I parked and got out to take a walk. I walked about 40 ft. of so, and had to cross a small alleyway. I looked down the alley and was astounded to see a dirty what drinking fountain on the side of the building that had a sign over it saying "Blacks Only". THAT was 1990!!! I bet it's still there!

The close friends we made while there were all transplants from another State. The locals all live in another century.

In the South, it's bad. A lot of men expect a woman to wait on them and cook for them. They should know how to fix themselves food so they don't starve to death. I like to cook and so does hubby, but we cook different things due to our tastes and my food allergies.

My husband is often called Mr. (My Last Name). I've never changed my last name because I liked the name I got from my dad, my dad was a cool guy, and I ran my own business for twenty years. It seemed like it was a vital part of my identity. Most people can't separate the concept of marriage and "two people must have the same last name to be married".

People assume that he owns the house and they must talk to him first. I own the house in my own name as separate property because I inherited it. Texas is a community property state which means that women are presumed to be equal in ability to own property and pay child support. This is due to the Spanish law influence which is more equal than French law (Louisiana) or English law (New England). Women have been able to own property in their own names in Texas since 1836, the first year of the Republic of Texas. The community property states tend to be Western states, where women had more rights than in Eastern states.

Men in the country don't like an educated woman like me correcting them when they come out with blanket statements that they think are gospel truth, but are wrong. They heard it on Fox News probably, and think it's true, without investigating. I have 12 years of college and earned three degrees, including a doctorate, so that is bad that I am educated and opinionated and informed. This seems to be a habit with them. They make blanket statements and don't expect to be challenged.

My stupid neighbor, female, told me that "women do the inside work and men do the outside work" whereupon I started ranting and raving about my gardening and my plants that I love. Yeah, hubby mows the lawn and picks up sticks. If he wasn't here I would mow it. I know how to operate a lawnmower since they have primer buttons and are self-propelled. We also have a riding mower.

I don't think the people here would understand an equal relationship. When my husband and I do something, we discuss it and come to an agreement. One of us does not tell the other one what to do. They think the man must dominate the woman.
