Well, this is outrageous.
The motion also really doesnt want the defense or anyone else to talk about medical marijuana during court proceedings. Medical marijuana remains illegal under federal law, even though 23 states, including Washington, legitimize its use. Because the case is in federal court, the defendants arent allow to discuss medical marijuana at all, giving the prosecution a straight shot at putting the family in jail for possibly 10 years each.

(2,861 posts)The controlled substances act created a redundant and parasitic government agency that provides absolutely no value to society whatsoever (DEA). As adults over the age of 21 we should be able to buy and use whatever drug we want without fear of persecution from our government. This is a linchpin issue that has had terrible rippling effects from privatized prisons, gun violence, and all sorts of mayhem to prisoners being slaved out. I read another article today about a private women's prison were the inmates were repeatedly being raped. Drug prohibition is a crime against humanity and anyone that supports it is pro crime and anti freedom. I hope these policies get burned down in my lifetime. How can we be 'the land of the free' and the land with more people in prison than any other nation. What good will it do any of us if these folks get sent away. Fuck the drug war. It needs to end yesterday.

(2,861 posts)The drug market has always existed and probably predates civilization itself. Criminalizing drugs doesn't stop the flow or take them out of the picture. It only makes them more dangerous. It artificially inflates the cost of drugs and creates a huge profit source for criminal and terrorist organizations. When people suffer a traumatic injury with broken bones we treat their pain with opiates. Those work best for pain. The problem is that many people become addicted, especially if they have to use them for a long period of time. I have heard that as many as 1 in 4 people become addicted. I don't know if that is entirely accurate, but that's not the point. These folks are not criminals, but once they become addicted it's all down hill from there. These people should be able to walk into a pharmacy and buy a bottle of pain pills without having to jump through hoops of fire to get what they need. The alternative is going to a heroin dealer and buying something that might be cut with cement powder or rat poison and served up in an aids tainted needle. The government recently reclassified Hydrocodone and Oxycodone and made them more restricted and harder to get. Now we see a surge in heroin on the streets which is cheap and easy to get. Prisons should be reserved for those who commit acts of violence and those who take what is not theirs. Addicts do not belong in prison simply because they are addicted. Imagine locking up tobacco users. Some tobacco users are addicts too. It's just a different drug that is arguably more lethal. How many people die each year from tobacco use? Our current system of drug laws is without reason, and needs a complete overhaul. We are supposed to be a free country. We should start acting like one. I respectfully disagree with you in regards to other drugs, but I'm glad that we agree on cannabis.

(27,677 posts)The federal marijuana case has drawn wide attention in a state where the recreational use of pot is legal, and among marijuana advocates across the nation.
Federal authorities contend the five violated Washington's medical marijuana laws when drug agents seized 75 marijuana plants, guns and business records from a rural property near the town of Kettle Falls in August 2012.
But defense attorneys contended that Congress recently passed a budget bill that included a provision banning federal funds from being used to prevent states from implementing their own laws on medical marijuana.
