Friend: This Was No ‘Parking’ Murder

Dean Obeidallah

Official word is that the shooting of three young Muslims in North Carolina was over a parking. The victims’ friends and family insist it was over hate.

Last week when I, along with 13 other Muslim Americans, met with President Obama at the White House, I explained my concern that given the recent rise in anti-Muslim bigotry, I feared that we could wake up one day to the news that someone had gone on a shooting spree targeting Muslim Americans.

Tragically, less than a week later, that very thing may have happened in North Carolina.

Yes, I know that we can’t be certain at this moment exactly why the gunman murdered three Muslim-American students—Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23; Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21; and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19—in cold blood. And true, the local police have noted that its “preliminary investigation indicates that the crime was motivated by an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking.”

But I doubt very much that anti-Muslim hate didn’t play some role in this attack. I say that based on a few factors. One is my conversation with two close friends of the victims and the comments made by the father of the two sisters killed. Second, we can’t ignore that on the day of the shooting we saw wall-to-wall media coverage about the death of the American aid worker and ISIS hostage Kayla Mueller. And finally, we have to factor in the overall rise in anti-Muslim rhetoric we have witnessed on both the right and the left recently.

The sheer number of homicides related to road rage alone would triple.

3. Maybe they weren't an anti-Muslim hate crime

That hardly seems likely. But it certainly will be interpreted as such by ISIS and other radicals. I fear that Chapel Hill, NC, will be targeted in revenge.

as a huge fan and member of the "Americans who avoid military service and real war" group but who fanatically collects all kinds of killer-toys to still feel macho, his hatred for Muslims could've been triggered by Clint "avoided military service, too" Eastwood's movie that appeals to most gun-fanatics and this could be the result.

The reactions after having seen the movie by some commenters tells me this is not a good movie for unstable gun-fanatics to see.

He was drafted in 1950 and discharged in 1953. He used the GI bill to study acting.

7. Yes, he was DRAFTED during the Korean War and stationed

at Ft. Ord in California where he remained and served as a lifeguard. He never left Ft Ord those three years, and he was never deployed to war (nor volunteered for it), unlike 36,516 combat and non-combat soldiers who had died in that unnecessary war.

But if you count him getting swimming lessons at the taxpayer's expense as "serving in the Army" just because he didn't avoid the Draft, then you're correct. I don't.

Drafted into the Army during the war in Korea, Eastwood was sent to Ft. Ord in California for basic training. He lucked into a job as a swimming instructor and remained at Ft. Ord. He worked nights and weekends as a bouncer at the NCO club.

It's not like he was given special treatment. He was a nobody when he was drafted. Not everyone who is drafted goes to war.

You claimed he avoided military service, he did not.

He was a secretary in safe forts, nowhere near Korea. The majority of positions in the military are support positions. I was Aerospace Ground Equipment. I worked on the equipment that they used to work on the planes with. No one from my MOS ever saw battle, either. Always in "safe" locations. We all served. Do not denigrate someones service record because they didn't see battle.
