Top 10 reasons parents don’t vaccinate — debunked

As a measles outbreak centered in California sends health care professionals across the country into a tailspin, the media are shining a light on the small yet vocal group of parents who delay their children’s vaccines or skip out on them altogether.

Why exactly are these parents opposed to vaccinations for diseases that have historically caused serious health issues even death in children? The reasons are complicated, SFGate found after checking in with Dr. Paul Katz, pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente San Rafael.

Dr. Katz helped us develop a list of the top 10 reasons why parents don’t vaccinate and explained why their reasoning is often irrational and their information not supported by medical evidence.

1) These illnesses are rare. This point is interesting because the reason diseases such as polio are no longer taking children’s lives is successful vaccination programs. But because an increasing number of parents are failing to vaccinate their kids, some are making a comeback. Cases in point: California experienced the largest whooping cough outbreak in 70 years in 2014 when more than 10,000 cases were reported. The country is currently in the midst of a measles outbreak centered in California; more cases of measles were reported in the first month of 2015 than the number that is typically diagnosed in a full year.

Too important. Especially with the numbers of infected increasing daily. Not sure how many in Illinois now but last I saw was 10. And it doesn't seem to be linked to the Disney land outbreak.
