An ex-bank employee accused of stealing more than $46,000 from a dead woman’s estate will be tried in Douglas County District Court.

Erica M. Smith, 34, of Bellevue was charged with felony theft by deception Wednesday and released on her own recognizance. She faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

An official with First National Bank of Omaha told police that it was discovered Smith had cashed a certificate of deposit “for over $46,000” belonging to a deceased customer on Oct. 1, 2014. Smith allegedly then began drawing money out of the woman’s account. A bank official said Smith is no longer employed there.
