Jury recommends life without parole for in 'cultlike' Tulsa murder, kidnapping case

A jury convicted a 54-year-old Tulsa man of eight felony charges including murder, kidnapping and assault on Tuesday.

George Emile July, whose first name is listed in some records as Emile or Emil, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 34-year-old Quinton Shaver, as well as three counts of kidnapping, two counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and one count each of drug possession and possessing a firearm after a former felony conviction.

Prosecutors alleged that July and co-defendant Angel Proctor beat Shaver to death in a house near Pine Street and Peoria Avenue; kidnapped and held captive Shaver, his girlfriend and July’s girlfriend; and assaulted Shaver’s and July’s girlfriends between Nov. 9 and 10, 2013.

Assistant District Attorneys Kali Strain and Heather Anderson did not discuss what motive July might have had to kill Shaver, but shortly after the slaying homicide detectives relayed to the Tulsa World that people they had interviewed called July “a time bomb waiting to go off” who carried illegal weapons and ruled through threats and violent acts.
