FOX "NEWs": ‘Zero’ People Have Been Killed in the Name of Every Religion But Islam

Fox’s Bolling: ‘Zero’ People Have Been Killed in the Name of Every Religion But Islam
by Josh Feldman | 12:41 pm, February 7th, 2015 VIDEO

Eric Bolling ended today’s Cashin’ In with his absolute disgust with President Obama‘s comments about the Crusades, claiming that exactly “zero” people have been killed in the name of every single religion outside of Islam.

Obama said at the National Prayer Breakfast this week that Christians shouldn’t get on a “high horse” about radical Islam because “terrible deeds” have been done in the name of Christianity too. He cited the Crusades and the Inquisition as two examples.

Conservatives objected to Obama’s invocation of these dark times in Christianity’s history while not addressing threats in the modern day––not hundreds of years ago––by radical Islamic terrorists.

Bolling said Obama not only crossed the line, but “pole-vaulted over the line,” and then made this claim:

"Reports say radical Muslim jihadists killed thousands of people in the past few months alone. And yet when you take Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, whatever, their combined killings in the name of religion––well, that would be zero.”

He concluded that Obama’s comments were “deeply offensive to Christians” and he should apologize immediately.

Of course, Bolling willfully ignores many recent examples of Christian terrorism within our own borders. In December, Think Progress noted one such incident of Christian terrorism:

In July, 2013, Alternet reminded us of another example of far-right Christian terrorism in the form of a 2009 attack on an abortion doctor:

This “Gospel civilization,” many believed, didn’t just permit slavery — it required it. Christians across the Confederacy were convinced that they were called not only to perpetuate slavery but also to “perfect” it. And they understood the Bible to provide clear moral guidelines on how to properly practice it. The Old Testament patriarchs owned slaves, Jewish law clearly assumed its permissibility and the Apostle Paul’s New Testament letters repeatedly compelled slaves to be obedient and loyal to their masters. Above all, as Southerners never tired of pointing out to their abolitionist foes, the Gospels fail to record any condemnation of the practice by Jesus Christ.

and all the pagans who died fighting for religious freedom and their right to not be forcibly christianized. My Estonian forebears and their fellow Baltic peoples fought and died for this in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.

Christian Violence in the Past Century

In the spring of 2013, Middle East historian Juan Cole decided to compare the body counts between violence committed by Christians and that committed by Muslims in the 20th century. He found that Muslim violence has claimed the lives of around 2 million people, mostly during the Iran-Iraq war and the war in Afghanistan, while violence by Christians claimed the lives of close to 100 million people. Here's what that looks like on a pie graph:

Some of this Christian-led violence is well-known: the World Wars, the Holocaust, the colonial wars in Southeast Asia and Africa. Critics of this analysis would be quick to say that this violence may have been by Christians, but it wasn't in the name of Christianity. But in virtually every conflict Cole ticks off, the combatants were overtly religious, and often invoked their religion as part of their military campaigns, just as many of the Islamist militants today are not fighting solely due to a religious grievance, but are organized around groups that share a common religious and cultural background.

But religion has played a more explicit role in some of the 20th-century conflicts involving Christians. For example, the 1990 sectarian warfare in the Balkans culminated in an explicit genocide against Muslim Bosnians by Serbian Orthodox Christians. As Balkans researcher Keith Doubt explained in a 2007 paper, the Serbian Orthodox Church was one of the prime movers in the campaign to scapegoat Bosnian Muslims and justify the eventual ethnic cleansing and genocide that took place. He notes that the “role of the Church as protector of the Serbian nation gave the Church increasing social control, and with this power clergy fermented a xenophobic and bigoted attitude towards Muslims in former-Yugoslavia.”

The article does not mention the Armenian Genocide which claimed the lives of up to 1.5 million Christians.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenian_Genocide :

The Armenian Genocide[7] (Armenian: Հայոց Ցեղասպանություն Hayots Tseghaspanutyun),[8] also known as the Armenian Holocaust, the Armenian Massacres and, traditionally by Armenians, as Medz Yeghern (Armenian: Մեծ Եղեռն, "Great Crime&quot ,[9] was the Ottoman government's systematic extermination of its minority Armenian subjects from their historic homeland within the territory constituting the present-day Republic of Turkey. The total number of people killed as a result has been estimated at between 1 and 1.5 million.

If other religions were included, then it would still show that more people died as a result of non-Christian religions than Islam. An example would be the various Chinese civil wars in the 20th century, or even Chairman Mao's mishandling of things in the Great Leap Forward that caused millions of Chinese to starve to death. I haven't began to dig at India vs Pakistan or elsewhere.

So Obama is correct and those in the news entertainment industry have it wrong. Al-Quaeda, Islamic State, the Lebanese Civil War, the wars in Afghanistan, and many more.... still not as many as killed by people with Christian "heritage".

"The Puritans in New England were not immediately presented with an Indian problem, for diseases introduced earlier by trading ships along the coast had badly decimated the Indian population. Yet when the Pequots resisted the migration of settlers into the Connecticut Valley in 1637, a party of Puritans surrounded the Pequot village and set fire to it. About five hundred Indians were burned to death or shot while trying to escape; the Whites devoutly offered up thanks to God that they had lost only two men. The woods were then combed for any Pequots who had managed to survive, and these were sold into slavery. Cotton Mather was grateful to the Lord that "on this day we have sent six hundred heathen souls to hell."
