2/1/15
As first reported by WESH, and confirmed by the Orlando Sentinel, Jan. 30 was the last day of employment for hundreds of workers at Walt Disney World. Although Disney would not confirm the exact number of people who were let go, they did confirm employees were informed in Oct. 2014 that they would be losing their jobs due to restructuring.
Many of the workers were employed in the information technology group at the park. They were the ones who worked on the park's MagicBands, which are very popular with guests.
...Some of these employees were told in October that they would have to re-apply for their jobs. Disney said in a statement it wants "to support future innovation and new capabilities, and will work with leading technical firms to maintain our existing systems." The company eliminated these tech positions in the Orlando, Fla. area, but will continue to outsource some information-technology jobs to companies such as India-based HCL Technologies.
In June, 2012, HCL signed an IT outsourcing contract with Walt Disney in a deal valued at over $200 million, terminating their deal with IBM in the process. Some Orlando employees blamed their own Jan. 30 layoff on this outsourcing.

(7,830 posts)I guess these things are only truly an outrage & worthy of public outcry if they appear in MSM as such.
Disney is being unpatriotic & harming our country, and they're not alone in deserting US, while taking our $$$ and making a good profit. I wish more people would publicly shame them.
I wish we didn't need the media to tell us what is worthy of public disdain. If only for one week, I wish outsourcing our jobs for stockholders benefits & CEO pay & extra cash for campaign donations to keep the scam going could be vaccines or ebola. Maybe something would change.

(11,927 posts)I would say that at least 80-85% of the names on the credits were foreign. I know it doesn't mean they were in a foreign country, they could have been US citizens, but we always sit around and watch the credits for all the movies we see. We have definitely noted that all movie making, regardless of studio, seems to be much more global than it used to be -- even 10 yrs ago. It's one thing as long as the quality stays up, but sometimes (as we've noticed with Disney animation), quality seems to take a hit. One of my friend's daughter's was just hired by Pixar a year ago. She said that she is not in the division that is getting cut this time, but there is no guarantee for next time.
