(12,157 posts)This was rovian misdirection at its best or worst. It did 2 things discredited the true story of babybush's military service and as a bonus got rid of Rather, the perennial thorn in their side. Much as I can't stand rove one must admire his strategic ability.

(26,549 posts)Williams was not claiming we need to invade because of an RPG. He was not saying "Look at what a badass I am". He was saying "thanks for protecting me".

Again, Dan was a stand-alone thing.

(52,791 posts)We all knew that at the time. But CorpoMedia didn't even have Keith Olbermann saying anything different. This was before his apotheosis.

(6,145 posts)Roger Stone, the Republican political operative claims credit for fooling Rather with the phony document and killing the story. There was no deliberate deception on Rather's part.
I'm not sure how NBC can rationalize letting Williams keep his job after this.

(242 posts)Karl Rove reproduced the EXACT LETTER that was used just using new fonts... all knowing he could point back to it later in calling it a "fraud" because "that font didn't exist"
But the fact that the Monkeyboy president was a complete part of the 'Champagne Unit' was completely true.
And Dan Rather ... he's just expendable, as are most people in the right-wing mind.

The USAF personnel management system I was in for 20 years (62 to 83) would have handed a jock his head and other body parts for that stunt. Among other things, "failure to complete annual flight physical" would have resulted in a board of inquiry, then probably a reclassification or release with cause. None of which happened.
For the remaining two years in TANG, Shrub wasn't qualified in any specialty. He was never reinstated on flight status nor was he trained in any other AFSC. In short, tax payers popped for about a million bucks so he could put in about 68 flight hours, re his AF Form 11. He started pissing away our money long before he and Cheney got to the WH.
As for the AWOL, technically he probably wasn't. His commander knew about it, probably ordered under the table to let him disappear. The Reserve personnel center never issued orders reassigning him from Ellington AFB.
And the son of bitch strutted across the deck of USS Lincoln wearing a flight suit, packing socks.

(4,280 posts)you read "Fortunate Son", by Hatfield? It was finally published. If Dan Rather had been able to make that report, Bush would have never been President. But, our Corporate Media caved. It's an interesting book!
