... the US formally recognizes the ICC and turns Bush, Cheney and any commanding officers who ordered torture or other war-crimes over to it.
Deal?

(342 posts)to secure corporate oil interests and kill all those brown-skinned people whom we have pissed off simply by invading their countries and attempting to destroy their cultures. I know, I know, it is our manifest destiny to destroy cultures, remove them from their native lands, and steal their resources by making deals with the head honchos wherein the big kahuna gets fabulously wealthy, we get the goods, and the natives get nothing but seething hatred for us. What is the matter with those people?" But, don't they understand that that is the very way our great country came about? Can't they just write a letter or e-mail any American Indian and get the lowdown on how things should work? What is all the fuss about?
Don't they understand that we must have their resources in order to support the lifestyles of the rich and famous uber wealthy while our middle class disappears into poverty? Jeez, the nerve of those people! Oh, sure, we could invest our vast resources into developing alternative energy sources but that would put the lazy freeloaders of our great Country to work, a terrible situation that might deprive our wealthy 1% of acquiring every last dollar. So, bring on the drones, overthrow governments under the guise of democratizing them, and assassinate any who oppose. And, we must do it quickly before that significant group of American citizens who deplore such action gains more strength, more say into how the Country is run. Why, the first thing you know, those misguided folks will have health care for all; jobs for any who desire them; guaranteed educational opportunities; and a social safety net. But, not to worry, BrotherIvan, those radicals and their stupid ideas can be held in check so long as the Supreme Court, mega-powerful corporations, filthy rich power brokers buying legislators, and a plethora of voters continue to vote against their own interests merely to show that "edicated people don't know shit", continue to have unrestrained power.
But, you know, my friend, I'm an old man now and may not live to see it but I sense a groundswell of ordinary folks rising to the task of overcoming all the barriers, making a new manifest destiny based upon the dignity of all peoples.

(18,998 posts)Where Winston Smith refused to say that 2+2 equals 5...untill they threatened to put a cage full of hungry rats on his face.
That movie is a classic and I thought every one would get it.

(32,324 posts)the programming of earlier generations, many people don't know about classic books.
I am always glad when the Sci Fi channel has a marathon of the old Twilight Zone series, as those shows tried to make people think. But very little in the Nation's Youthful Consciousness allows for any real instruction.

(18,998 posts)And it is not their fault, they were just born into this world and accept what they get...and basically we did not give them shit...(not we personally but as a society)
We allowed our schools to become factories that turned out a product instead of teaching them to think and learn.
But the bright side is that a lot of the old stuff is on you tube now...so it is not lost just forgotten.
I guess I should have posted this to explain...

(18,998 posts)But I too read it in the 60s.
But the movie that came out in 1984 was top notch and Orwell would have been proud of it.
And that scene was fixed firmly in my mind.

All the more important as The Powers that Be are figuring out how they can substitute drones for patrol cars here in the USA.

(50,983 posts)I like the new Marine's commercial. If they're really a force to stop global injustice and tyranny.
They could start here.
