Only US network to feature graphic video showing Muadh al-Kasasbeh burning to death.
Twitter accounts associated with Isis supporters are sharing video via links to Fox News
"On Twitter, accounts associated with Isis supporters are sharing the video via the links to the Fox News site. One account, which regularly posts pro-Isis slogans and updates about Islamic State victories in battle, tweeted boastfully that Whoever is looking for the al-Furqan version [of the video], here it is and it cannot be deleted because it is on an American network.
(Al-Furqan is Isis media outlet)

No. ISIS is not a legally declared foreign enemy, so also has free speech rights.

No. But if ISIS produces a snuff movie of an American fighter pilot tortured and burned alive, then Yes.

(68,644 posts)But Fox News does.
I don't like that they give ISIS any bandwidth, but that's what they do.

(62,444 posts)But that has nothing to do with whether they have a right to show it.
People have the right to do all kinds of indefensible things.

(23,664 posts)Just kidding actually. I'd be happy if neither Fox News nor Homeland Security existed. Both of them are threats to our freedom.

(26,060 posts)Nobody is saying isis has free speech rights. But our media does. It think it was stupid and short sighted but that's fox's problem. Once you start censoring what the media can and cannot show, that's a slipperly slope that will no doubt lead to them censoring something you want shown.

(23,946 posts)propaganda outlet. By an American corporation based in America.
Did Vietnam have a media outlet during the war to spread their propaganda in America? Based in America?
This is a snuff movie..what if it were an American F-16 POW pilot?

(588 posts)manipulating the news they should lose all their press credentials and access to the WH and Congress and any and all federal government property.
They can no longer claim to report the news they are nothing more then propagandists.
I believe in a free media not a media that manufactures news and propaganda.

(16,191 posts)As much as I despise them, as biased as they may be, they do qualify as the press. As such they should be free from government interference.
Besides, the premise in your first answer is flawed. Fox may be alone among the major American media organizations to show the video, but it's readily available though plenty of other smaller media organizations and international organizations. If the government were given the power to censor major media sites, how long would it take them to start censoring small sites posting less horrific bits of video.

(23,946 posts)American media company worldwide is just the unfortunate price of free speech?
Tell that to the next terrorist group or nation America is at war with and they produce a video of a burned alive American fighter pilot.
Add to the vile Fox mix the usual racism.
Why not post the whole gallery of ISIS execution videos, full length?
Would that be good also, it would have to be to protect free speech?
I think there is an "aiding and abetting an enemy" exception to the first amendment.

(16,191 posts)The First Amendment isn't about protecting speech that we like, but about protecting speech that we oppose. Except in certain very rare cases where the government can show that the video contributes to ongoing harm against the victim (child porn, as an example), or where it is designed to cause immediate harm (yelling 'FIRE' in a theater) law enforcement should NEVER be able to limit your right to speech.
I find Daesh repugnant and wouldn't shed a tear if they all dropped dead tomorrow, but I find it astounding that LIBERALS would support restricting the right of free speech and the free distribution of media just to keep their message off the Internet. Disliking Fox News and ISIS is no reason to compromise a cornerstone left-wing value.
"I have always been among those who believed that the greatest freedom of speech was the greatest safety, because if a man is a fool, the best thing to do is to encourage him to advertise the fact by speaking." - Woodrow Wilson (D)
"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." - United Nations General Assembly (1948). Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us." - William Douglas, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1952)
"We look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expressioneverywhere in the world." - Franklin D. Roosevelt (1941)
"The censor is always quick to justify his function in terms that are protective of society. But the First Amendment, written in terms that are absolute, deprives the States of any power to pass on the value, the propriety, or the morality of a particular expression." - William Douglas, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1966)
"Free speech is not speech you agree with, uttered by someone you admire. It's speech that you find stupid, selfish, dangerous, uninformed or threatening, spoken and sponsored by someone you despise, fear or ridicule. Free speech is unpopular, contentious and sometimes ugly. It reflects a tolerance for differences. If everyone agreed on all things, we wouldn't need it." - Robert J. Samuelson (2014)
"We have to uphold a free press and freedom of speech -- because, in the end, lies and misinformation are no match for the truth." - Barack Obama (2014)
