Added fructose is a principal driver of type 2 diabetes

Recent studies have shown that added sugars, particularly those containing fructose, are a principal driver of diabetes and pre-diabetes, even more so than other carbohydrates. Clinical experts writing in Mayo Clinic Proceedings challenge current dietary guidelines that allow up to 25% of total daily calories as added sugars, and propose drastic reductions in the amount of added sugar, and especially added fructose, people consume.

Worldwide, approximately one in ten adults has type 2 diabetes, with the number of individuals afflicted by the disease across the globe more than doubling from 153 million in 1980 to 347 million in 2008. In the United States, 29 million adults (one in eleven) have type 2 diabetes and another 86 million (more than one in three) have pre-diabetes.

"At current levels, added-sugar consumption, and added-fructose consumption in particular, are fueling a worsening epidemic of type 2 diabetes," said lead author James J. DiNicolantonio, PharmD, a cardiovascular research scientist at Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute, Kansas City, MO. "Approximately 40% of U.S. adults already have some degree of insulin resistance with projections that nearly the same percentage will eventually develop frank diabetes."

The net result of excess consumption of added fructose is derangement of both overall metabolism and global insulin resistance say the authors. Other dietary sugars not containing fructose seem to be less detrimental in these respects. Indeed, several clinical trials have shown that compared to glucose or starch, isocaloric exchange with fructose or sucrose leads to increases in fasting insulin, fasting glucose, and the insulin/glucose responses to a sucrose load. "This suggests that sucrose (in particular the fructose component) is more harmful compared to other carbohydrates," added Dr. DiNicolantonio.

- Fructose-Diabetes is an easily preventable disease. One that kills and maims hundreds of thousands each year. Of course the only ones who can prevent the disease's spreading effects from getting even worse are the producers and food processors who make it (Big Agri). And us, the ones who buy it.

If not eugenics and depopulation via preventable disease, then no amount of science or morality will stand in the way Big Agri and its profits.

PS: Can you imagine what kind of world this would be if all the undesirables lived long lives? The wealthy might have to pay their Social Security and all that. ( ) for those new to DU.

It was the best think since sliced bread, and quickly became a common ingredient in food products. No testing was ever done to determine if it may actually cause health issues. No one was thinking such things back then.

I don't think it was done with knowledge that it would be harmful. It was all about being cheap and making money.

It's a huge crop and they need to sustain that.

And

HFCS is a form of sugar. People like sugar. It makes people like the taste of food more. Sugar, Salt and/or Fat is added to most processed foods to make it palatable to the American taste buds.

Even if we don't debate whether HFCS itself is bad or worse than sugar, the fact that due to Corn subsidies it has been added to more and more food products the increase in consumption has grown enormously.
That alone makes it bad for our health.

The 2010 Princeton study proved that the HFCS molecules is not the same as, nor is it metabolized like glucose. From the study:

    High-fructose corn syrup and sucrose are both compounds that contain the simple sugars fructose and glucose, but there at least two clear differences between them. First, sucrose is composed of equal amounts of the two simple sugars -- it is 50 percent fructose and 50 percent glucose -- but the typical high-fructose corn syrup used in this study features a slightly imbalanced ratio, containing 55 percent fructose and 42 percent glucose. Larger sugar molecules called higher saccharides make up the remaining 3 percent of the sweetener.

Glucose (found in cane/beet sugar) with its different molecular design requires the expenditure of more energy for our bodies to be able to use it, thereby using more energy to store and fewer calories left over as fat as a result. Lacking the need for the additional step, HFCS and its large saccharides molecules, go directly to storage in the brown fat of the body. This is not good.

Likewise, further studies on GMO rice in 2011 shows that the genetically-altered RNA of the rice was found intact after oral ingestion within the liver and other organs of mice. The cells there:
    ...were found to bind to the low-density lipoprotein receptor adapter protein 1 (LDLRAP1) mRNA, which inhibited LDLRAP1 expression in liver, and consequently decreased LDL (cholesterol) removal.
LDL cholesterol accumulations in the arteries of the heart can cause heart attacks and death. So this means that GMOs can directly impact cellular metabolism and thereby result in mutation or other dire consequences for bodily functions.

- If the same is true of all GMOs as has been found in the GMO rice, then it would explain much of why immune diseases and cancers are so prevalent in the human species.

that it is worse than sugar.
But that often gets debated here.
I am saying, even if we put aside it being worse, it's presence in so may foods in large portions is still a very bad thing.
And a major contributor to obesity and diabetes.

For the last few years when I have gone to my medical clinic trying to get medical records restored for a rare genetic disorder, I have had trouble breaking through the initial presumption that EVERYONE with chronic problems must have diabetes or pre-diabetes, and constantly needs to be re-tested for diabetes in case the test denied the doctor's false assumptions about patient lifestyles the first time. Diabetes has also been a large part of the shift to the Preventative Care model, which sounds great until you realize all those expensively-educated doctors are spending all their time giving speeches about diet and exercise and preaching about the evils of fructose instead of diagnosing other problems.

I almost feel that diabetes needs to spin off its own specialty and free up the rest of the doctors from all their rigamarole. A LOT of patients have diabetes - perhaps they need a segment of the medical community dedicated just to them...?

...or Dow or Syngenta or some other poison company -- then the GMOs go on to the corn field -- then to the food factories and into the stores and end up in our livers.

At the same time another set of distortions has started simultaneously in another lab at Merck, Pfizer or Eli Lilly's -- and it all ends up at your pharmacy with a prescription.

It's actually all a part of the same distortion, but it's broken up into stages and going on at different levels and venues -- and with sickness and hospitals -- few people ever live long enough to put it all together. To finally realize that they are just one part of a large continuum of livestock that feeds the profit machine.

By the time some have connected the dots, they're almost dead and besides no one wants to listen. When you have reached this point, congratulations are in order.

1/2 pound of bacon - healthy animal fats and proteins in near-perfect balance for my body - washed down with filtered water. I will have an apple for an afternoon snack.

I figured out HFCS 30 years ago, from the writings of a number of doctors and scientists who recommended low-carb diets as a response to my growing insulin resistance. This isn't rocket science, or new information. The fact that we're still fighting this battle today is one of the things that makes me livid about our modern globalized techno-industrial economy.

- We're a nation largely made up of automatons. Most people I know can't stand the sound of silence. As soon as they get home each day, on comes the teevees the computers and/or the smartphones -- anything that will distract them from the thoughts in their own heads. They must keep the programming fresh.

It's sad.

I have to live in a world in which everyone blames my condition on HFCS and NOT Agent Orange????????

I think this is a PLOT of the MIC. They just don't want to accept responsibility.

It's a world full of Paul Ryan lovers who hate Vets!

Cases in 2008: 347,000,000

World population 1980: 4,454,000,000
World population 2008: 6,689,000,000

Percentage affected 1980: 3.45
Percentage affected 2008: 5.19

Might not seem like huge numbers, but that's quite a jump in overall cases.
