Either pre or post- Bush presidency?
Going back to Salem Bin Laden and his investment in Arbusto Energy and Bush selling his interest in Harken Energy. He was an uncle to Osama Bin Laden, coincidentally.

There are also many stories about his youth. For example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_life_of_George_W._Bush
========
But, to the untrained eye, it may look like he screwed up everything he ever touched in his life? If there is one lesson to be learned from the ballot box and the precious right to vote, it is that there can be severe consequences to our votes?
When he got into the White House, in typical Dubya and Rove fashion, he did not disappoint in his recklessness and terrible decision-making. He, and his supporters. left this nation on very precarious ground. It is only now that we are finally able to get back up and stand on our feet.

(12,159 posts)His main accomplishment is to bankrupt everything he ever touched. Oh an to be an AWOL deserter who was never charged just like he won't be charged as a war criminal, evah.

(30,058 posts)Governor. This was before his friends cleaned out the sources. What I don't know if he did not complete his military, was told to submit to a physical but just told them he would see his own doctor (was rumored he had a cocaine problem at the time), he loved to party and there was cocaine at his parties. When he started to run for president the internet was cleaned up.
His greatest accomplishment was moving out of the WH.

(12,159 posts)I was an enlisted may in that unit at the same time. The facts are that he quit making drills for an extended time. If I or any of my fellow techs had done the same we would've been activated into the Army or Marines tout de suite and deployed in Vietnam. I transferred out of that unit to one in another state. The procedure is to be discharged from your 1st unit and to get accepted into the new unit. You have 45 days from the time of discharge to enlistment in the new unit. I did this twice as I transfered back to the 147th in Houston. Bush just didn't show.
While he was away AWOL the Houston unit changed from F-102 interceptors to F-101 Voodoo interceptors. He didn't want to learn the new plane which was not a problem for all the other pilots. They all qualified in short order. I have doubts that he ever flew the F-102 solo but maybe just went up in the 2 seater TF-102 with an instructor. Of all the pilots I have met he is the only one to voluntarily quit flying.
Its all a bit dodgy.
This man has made a career of lying and failing and being propped up again by his Daddy's friends.

(7,596 posts)It's incredible to me, even to this day, that such a moronic man with a totally paper-thin resume could not only capture the Republican nomination for president but somehow delude half the country into voting for him. Future historians are going to look back at this era of history and wonder WTF was wrong with people in this period.

(5,790 posts)My personal perspective: Medicare D (the drug benefit) and tax breaks for 529 college funds.
I think historians will give a more vague answer about his leadership after 9-11 and bringing the nation together. YMMV.
Political scientists will point to the 2000 election (of course) and the way that the Bush WH governed like they had a 59 state mandate when they lost the 2000 popular vote and barely won in 2004.

(16,646 posts)He supported and funded, at the White House level, a lot of efforts in Africa for the prevention of the spread of Aids in Africa. Say what you will, he ramped up funding and followed the advice of the NGO's on the ground, not the fundies back home that wanted abstinence only approaches.

(42,641 posts)Clearly his greatest accomplishment is giving hope to the vast majority of people who have little sense and less information that THEY TOO can be President. Goes to show that Reagan was not an aberration. Ignorant people may not understand a lot, but they do go to the polls.

If you ignore the ways it screwed up the country and the world, it's kind of impressive.

(4,229 posts)Seriously. In the minds of the public republicans are always serious and responsible.
We know it's not true, but Bush went so far over the top with all the things the GOP did that at that point he spoiled enough of the independents on the GOP brand that Obama was able to get in. At any other time a black person would have never won.
