John McCain calls JFKs assassination an intervention
Friday, Oct 17, 2008 From the final presidential debate of the campaign. Terrifying during the debate was the moment when John McCain was comparing himself and Obama to Goldwater and Jack Kennedy when he described JFKs assassination as something like this: the intervention (eyes open wide, eyebrows high, grabs nose) err tragedy in Dallas

(42,768 posts)it can (and quite often does) simply mean "to come or occur between two times or events" (which is how McCain was using it in the debate).

McCain, not photoshopped
Hard to believe this is not photoshopped. John McCain actually did this. The description from Yahoo, where it's curently the #1 most emailed photo in the world:
US Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain (R-AZ) reacts to almost heading the wrong way off the stage after shaking hands with Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) at the conclusion of the final presidential debate . . .
Does he think the cameras go off when they stand up?
This isn't the only reason he's behind, of course. Eight years of Rs, a dynamic opponent, a tanking economy, etc., all helped.
But a Steady Reliable Wise Man might have actually turned the crisis into his biggest advantage. The country wants someone they trust in a crisis. Everything else is out the window.

(65,490 posts)when we realize we've goofed up, he grimaced and made an embarrassed gesture meant to be self-deprecating as he followed Obama off the stage. The expression and hand gestures lasted for only a second, but unfortunately for Gramps, it was immortalized on film. If you see a video of the moment (or see it live, as most of us did), it is far less grotesque than the photo makes it seem.
That picture just happens to be from an angle that makes his grimace and gesture seem more outrageous than it actually was in the moment.
Now, having said all that, I have to admit that I LOVE that picture and the way oit makes McCain look, because although it really wasn't that grotesque a moment in real life, it nevertheless does capture what I see as the essence of the man. He is not at all a serious person. Instead, he is an opportunist, a self-aggrandizing SOB, and a troll who has managed to weasel his way into a position of power and influence. His political behavior (and the damage it causes) *is* as grotesque as that picture makes a brief, innocuous moment seem to be. Therefore, although it is a real picture of a real occurrence but a false representation of what actually was going on at that moment, it is a true representation of the significance and effect of the awful trolling that his political career has always been.
ON EDIT: I also see this picture as a perfect embodiment of the stark contrast between Obama's cool, collected *seriousness* as a leader and a statesman and the bizarro clownishness of the RW opposition to him.

thesquanderer
(11,993 posts)Especially since people to tend to try to talk in a heightened, more dignified manner when on a national debate stage. Or, for that matter, when talking about a tragedy. And this was both.
And it is certainly more normal sounding than talking about a plot to take down JFK as an "intervention" -- that's not a word you even hear used to describe it from CT folk.
Plus, even assuming there was something nefarious about the assassination that we don't know about... I doubt McCain would know, either. And if he did, doubt that he would slip in that manner and with these words.
Plus the "official" reading of it makes perfect sense in the context of the point he was trying to make. Plus his manner did not indicate any kind of "oops" moment.
You have to make such a ridiculous stretch in so many directions to male this what the OP says. I think Occam's razor comes into play here. What it seems like on the surface is probably what it is.
There is so much to really rail Republicans about, including McCain. It's a shame to get caught up in nonsense instead.

(55,745 posts)Wonder if anyone said that about American voters and leaders before Nov. 21, 1963.
"The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves... l don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist because of the irresponsibility of its own people." -- Henry Kissinger on the US-backed coup d'etat in Chile.
And we wonder why the US keeps moving to the right, even when we vote in leaders who promise to move things to the left.
Almost forgot: I read somewhere that JFK found Henry Kissinger to remind him of Nelson Rockefeller's petrocentric worldview. And Prof. Kissinger got a chance to share it from Eisenhower through JFK and beyond. Seeing how closely this world has become Big Oil and Wall Street's playground, the president might've been on to something.
