(82,849 posts)Must be a great time around the table at Thanksgiving. Please welcome Aunt Mildred, Cousin Bobby, the twins Jerry and Mary, Johnny, Peggy, and of course, our guest of honor, the Senator and his food taster. Hope this one lasts longer than the last one, heh, heh.

(2,101 posts)Perhaps the greatest difference between today's Florida and the stone age is the absence of caves. I'll bet the stone buildings in Tallahassee stir a primordial yearning for clubbing the female staffers.

(61,650 posts)I blame the Democratic Party for losing that election in 2010. We had a great candidate who could have taken out Burr, but the DNC and the state Democratic Party had to primary her, and then hold a run-off, and by the time Elaine Marshall had won the nomination she was out of money.
I have not forgiven the Democratic Party for that.

(4,847 posts)quantities of money to their favorite whorish candidate; the people and this country are already fekked. Unless enough people finally figure out that money can buy a lot of untruths and the candidate the elite wants may not be healthy for we the people.

(61,650 posts)The rest of us go about our lives. The sociopaths who care for nothing but power and money scheme all day every day for power and money, so they end up being in charge.
It's a serious flaw in the system and I can't figure out how to fix it. Maybe if we instituted a draft instead of electing people? Kind of like jury duty, except that instead of having to report for jury duty you have to report as president of the U.S. or senator from North Carolina or your district's representative on the school board, etc.
I honestly think it would be a better system than what we have.

(4,847 posts)who use a lottery to pick their council. I thought that would be something, that the house of representatives would be by lottery. Government classes would be a requirement for all students-maybe three, four classes. Everyone would have to do their civic duty, doesn't matter what field you're in-of course, there would be some reasons for exclusion, like being so ill you can't serve. Then, the representatives would chose the senators. And senators could be known economists, engineers, and others that could really help the country. The position of president would be by the vote of the people.
Anyway, I thought it was unique that there is a town who uses the lottery system, and it seems to work for them. Everyone must be involved citizens.

(23,272 posts)I'm honestly curious. Who would pay them/lobby against this, and why do these Rs think that this vote will do them any favors with half of the voting population? Was it just a kneejerk reflex to vote No, or was there a reason?

(53,475 posts)... at my local level the Democratic Party is at best, inept. But we're trying. We have someone to run against Glenn Grothman for the first time in six years (more?, I can't remember).

(20,317 posts)I'm surprised any politician-- even a Republican-- would choose to come out against this in the current political climate. But then, they have seemed to largely boiled down to just being 'against' anything that the other team is for.
