Androids the prostitutes of the future?

Professors in New Zealand believe that by 2050, Amsterdam's red light district may be full of android prostitutes, whose prices will be controlled by the city council. Are prostibots in your future?

snip

In their paper "Robots, Men and Sex Tourism," Professor Ian Yeoman and Michelle Mars focused with some resolution on how Amsterdam's red light district might look in 2050.

They offer more reasons than mere perfectly flushed fluids for their prognostication. They say the prostibots -- working in a sex club with the very onomatopoeic named "Yub-Yum" -- would destroy the trafficking of human prostitutes from Eastern Europe and elsewhere. They also claim that these new androidesses will offer perfect beauty. I wonder how many beholders will agree.

but the sex robots will likely do for the working class, putting street hookers out of business by driving the prevailing prices down.

As for men being offended by the thought of fucking a machine, I'm reminded of the man who was busted for going at it with the umbrella hole on the patio picnic table or the one who was busted for going at it with a pumpkin in the middle of a field. There are certainly a lot of men out there who wouldn't mind.

My own ex would have humped the crack of dawn if he could have figured out the logistics.

And as I remarked, the price will certainly come down, sex robots needing neither food nor feeding a drug habit nor time to rest and recover every day. The good thing is that pimps will go out of business, too, replaced with robotics technicians and maybe a couple of greasy characters collecting the receipts.

Personally, I'm all for giving horndogs an outlet that doesn't hurt anyone else.

women setting themselves up as the arbiter of sexual availability in the group, etc. Maintaining a high "value" on sex by limiting the "supply". This is why, I suspect, we often see women rather than men as the first line of so-called "slut shaming", for instance.

Of course, this old school hunter gatherer impulse goes absolutely nuts in a media rich modern environment that is totally immune to these kinds of weird control fetishes.

Men - fleshlights, women - vibrators.

Women somehow don't have as much of a desire (as opposed to a need, as such things are so routinely mischaracterized) for certain things.

196. Honestly, I'm NEVER upset whenever I hear stereotypes/jokes about men.
Sat Apr 28, 2012, 09:09 PM
Apr 2012

And I think most men aren't. Not that we 'aren't allowed' to... we just aren't. We hear a joke, we know it's just that: a joke. A joke is supposed to be an exaggeration of the real world.

"Men are interested in only one thing..." Yeah, that's us! "Men will say or do anything to get inside a woman's pants"... Yeah, that's us! "Men are as faithful as their options. Your husband is not a hero for not cheating on you, he just never had the opportunity" (heard that one from Bill Maher)... Yeah, that's us! We admit that. We can see that and we can laugh about it when it's pointed out. We accept that we are perceived a certain way and, even though it may not be true about each and every one of us PERSONALLY, we acknowledge it's true for LOTS of us, and that's why we see the humor in it. Or we just laugh at the stereotypes. We know stereotypes are not meant to be taken seriously and that's why we find them funny.

However, when a comedian makes a joke about women... Or just *a* woman... that's a misogynistic pig who's enabling The Patriarchy in devaluing and degrading women and now we need to have a 200-post discussion about it.

Neither you nor anyone else is qualified to tell me what motivates me. Every man is an individual, and we, even us hetero men, aren't all fixated on sex with women.

I will repeat, in case you are thinking of challenging me on this: show proof of what you say.

207. Biology.
Sun Apr 29, 2012, 07:32 AM
Apr 2012

Look, I'm not saying you and me or any other men look to a woman ONLY as someone we can have sex with. That would be ludicrous. Of course we're looking for much more: we look for love, for companionship, for friendship, for intellectual stimulation etc. That's what we want from our partner in a relationship, right?

Okay, so all I'm saying is that, beneath all that, what drives us, biologically speaking, is still our primal instincts. We don't recognize them anymore, we don't acknowledge them as such anymore, but they're still there. When you find a woman attractive, beneath those layers and interests I mentioned above, the primal motivation is still... sex. Whether we want to admit that or not. But it's simple science. We just try to deny it because we're supposed to be more evolved now. But just because we care about a woman in much more different ways than just as someone to have sex with... deep down that's still how we're evolutionary wired; we're wired to mate and produce offspring.

(And then, of course, we could get into the debate over whether or not a transaction involving sex, money, and two consenting adults invariably implies "exploitation", but that would require at least another 400 post hair-tearing, cloth-rending thread.)

225. Is this how you build up your feminist credibility? It's so odd and superficial...
Sun Apr 29, 2012, 10:48 PM
Apr 2012

it's like i see this tremendous concern about shallow sex, about b and c word usage and younger feminists respecting older feminists.

okay, that's cool, but where are you on the bigger issues of equal pay, and not limiting roles in society based on gender and misogynist posts that don't have anything to do with b and c words but simple denigration of women through simple discrimination?

there are tons of these posts and threads on DU all the time and i just don't see you there and your support could really help in those cases.

instead all the effort is on this kind of issue, which is honestly, now that it's 2012, simple about people wanting sex and sexual pleasure any way that they can get it --which is not a new thing.

when i think of feminism and standing up for proper treatment of women, arguing against men having sex with robots is so meaningless in the context of a society that pays women 70 cents for every dollar a man makes, that still treats women as second class in many ways, that allows women to be charged more than men for health care, that an entire political party has tried to win an election by offering up the health care and civil rights of women???

and you're here arguing about horn dogs? really?

it would be nice to see you arguing about equal pay. but instead you're here arguing about this and the other times agitating against beauty pageants (although at DU the only praise for beauty pageants has not been their objectification, but instead when they are examples of inclusion of people of color and orientation).

it just seems to superficial to me to rage against this here and not about all the other crap that really does disadvantage women in our society.

i don't get it.

But it is quite to the point. There are three people making comments under this OP who are making that exact point. Men who would use these robots would be bad. But it is perfectly ok for women to use vibrators. To your point, its hard to find a woman who doesnt use a vibrator, so if those three people are making the argument that mechanical stimulation use is evil, they are making a statement about all of women as well. They dont get that.

An entire thread of women on an internet board who own plastic men surely, surely refutes the generalization that it is men who form the market for plastic people.

Were it not for the men, I venture to guess that (a) nobody would be making any life-sized, life-like plastic dolls of this, er, quality, in any, er, sex, and (b) if anybody was, the unit price would be so high that nobody beyond the 1% would be able to buy them. Demand from women really just did not create and would not sustain a market.

And I doubt that demand from women alone made it profitable to market this product in any event.

But yup, there are some women who buy plastic men. You win!

I chose to post that example for the benefit of the hard-of-reading because that forum had a separate area for male vs. female dolls. The question was NOT "Do women buy these as much as men?" or "Are women carrying this market?". That is known as Moving the Goalposts.

It's HORRIBLE, the reductio-gynocentric female gaze phallo-objectiflisnatzhartz which women with their evil womany woman ways turn all that is wonderful about a man into a plastic doo-dad that they can blithely and emotionlessly toss into the nightstand drawer. Sniff!

At least the MEN, the poor victimized matriarchy-abused men, who are still holding on to a shred of their dignity under the weight of the female oppressor, still cry out for a sliver of the humanity their fem overlords have denied them, by purchasing (or, I suppose, renting....yuk) a full body animatronic substitute-- of their cruel oppressionatrix!

Not the women, no, no, not the women. With their emotionless casual lack of regard for all that is good and decent, they can turn a man into a battery operated orgasm dispenser, and nothing more. And when those batteries are dead, what do they often do? THEY THROW THEM OUT, THAT'S WHAT.

They probably don't even use rechargeables. Sigh.

Yes, Yes. I blame the Matriarchy.

Is it a turn on? I'm genuinely interested. You can slam the majority of men (and that's exactly what you're doing, most of us are far better at logic than you are at punctuation), yet you will utterly defend women for doing the exact same thing. It's like you've become a caricature now. It's really extremely sad.

Everything that follows is Spielberg tripe that can be dismissed.

103. There is no need to be offended
Fri Apr 27, 2012, 01:23 AM
Apr 2012

As a man you can always decide to, you know, NOT fuck a machine. There, need to be offended avoided neatly and no harm done.

Furthermore, this is not in any practical way different than numerous other "sex aids" which are readily available right now, and have been for years and years. It's more technologically advanced and more "lifelike" one presumes, but not fundamentally different.

Women (and men) have been fucking things that AREN'T people for a long time now. The similarity between this idea in the OP and vibrators has been brought up to you several times now, and you have steadfastly refused to acknowledge it. Why? If there is some basic difference I'm not seeing it should be relatively easy for you to point it out. If there isn't and you aren't addressing it because you recognize the validity of that point then wouldn't it be better to simply admit that to yourself and thereby become wiser?

Lastly it seems to me that if android/robotic prostitutes become widely accepted than there will be a correspondingly FEWER number of young women taking on that role. Wouldn't that be a GOOD thing? It seems to me that would be cause to celebrate. Instead of some men using women as sexual objects they'd be using actual objects. Huzzah!!

Thu Apr 26, 2012, 07:11 PM

that become fetishized, like the "spacers" in Samuel R. Delaney's famous short story, Aye And Gomorrah. I think eventually science will greatly slow the aging process to where everyone looks and feels like a teenager or whatever age they prefer and we are given the easy opportunity to experience sex as alternatively a member of both genders or even genders we haven't even imagined yet. If sex is no longer taboo, no one fears getting old and settles for just one person to get old with, and everyone is young and beautiful there would be no demand for prostitutes and no exploitation.

And of course science will eventually enhance the sexual experience inside the brain of the recipient of sexual gratification, stimulating and increasing the brain's pleasure centers and giving long-lasting orgasms of an intensity we can't even dream of yet.

I have yet to have anyone tell me that, anytime I see a human checker at the supermarket, i need to visualize her being raped by her father, because she would obviously never have taken such a crappy job without some kind of past trauma. Or told me I should use the self-checkout rather than the human checker because that trauma left her useless as a human being and making her scan my groceries is dehumanizing. And I'm pretty sure that no one has swiped that checker's complaints about her past from her (confidential) sessions with her therapist and broadcast them all over the Internet.

Can't have it both ways, Snake. Either they're adults doing their job or they're useless damaged goods that should never have sex again. Pick one and stick with it.

Fewer actual women exploited, less spread of disease, lower birth rate. The only downside I see is the inability of some men who would primarily use these to properly learn how to emotionally connect with a real woman. (Sorry, that was a horribly constructed sentence but I don't feel like editing it.) However, I suspect a subset of men who would use a fem-bot for sex would probably have issues connecting with women regardless of the existence of this new technology.

As some other posters have opined, no one seems to be getting hurt, and choice is always a good thing, so I say live and let live. None of my business. I prefer my beautiful wife for such things, but other people have different proclivities and they should be allowed to indulge them if no one is getting damaged somehow.

Men who have sex with prostitutes are evil because they exploit human beings. Men who have sex with robots, instead, are ALSO evil because they are having sex with a machine in place of another human being! A human being, which, of course, they would be exploiting. But, ah..

Yeah!... And WHY is it that we can't have a thread (about sex) without talking about men wanting to stick their icky things into other things (i.e. Sex?) Is that all men ever want to do (in sex threads?) Why don't we hear about the mulititudinous other things men are capable of doing, like fly fishing, or hang gliding, or riding a segway (in a sex thread)

Plus it is TERRIBLE that men would use a machine to get off, which is of course nothing at all like women using a vibrator.

2. Vibrators were originally medical devices, invented because doctors were getting literally exhausted for having to manually masturbate so many female patients to orgasm. Thus, the vibrator was invented.

3. Some people in this thread are confusing vibrators and dildos.
