.... I have a long commute to work and still listen most weekdays.
Today, for the first time on Morning Edition, I heard them discuss the TPP. Guess what their focus was? Not on the substance of the trade agreement, which is somewhat secret and definitely not in the interest of most Americans. No, it was about wildlife poaching and how the TPP could curtail it.
Never mind that the leverage they claim the TPP would offer is dubious at best, they have never bothered to even talk about the substance of the proposed TPP before, and its ramifications to the average American.
It is astounding how low NPR has fallen. They are useless, Fox News with a supposed liberal bias.
Please do not waste your money supporting them, clearly they are getting quite enough from the corporate world.

(38,613 posts)They'll just make poaching legal. Then, if we were to, say, outlaw ivory sales in the U.S., we could get sued by the poachers.
But it would curtail poaching!

(86,802 posts)when I herd that crock of poo this morning. I have come to the conclusion, a couple years ago, that they have become a propaganda tool.
Wish I had access to other news on the radio in the morning. I only get one radio station and the NPR station from mormon university is all I get. If you think the national news is bad, you should hear the local/regional news in this area... as told by mormons... it could make your ears turn into clumps of salt.

(31,849 posts)a funny thing happened today (and has happened several time over the last couple of months) ... four times today, I went web-surfing while waiting for someone to complete their portion of a project, so I could continue with my part ... I was, also, listening to NPR. Each time I clicked to open an article, NPR did a segment on that particular topic!

Trust me on this one and look into it.
FYI : When you count the time that NPR spends on pledge drives, they Ctually have more advertising minutes in a year than commercial radio.

But it seems to make a lot of sense when you hear it.
Unless you think about it.

.affiliates that do do progressive shows. By progressive, I mean pro-labor, or shows exposing the racist reality in many police shootings. They carry Bill Moyer's radio show and Robert Scheer and Harry Shearer. I give to the best local stationnot the mother ship. It's a tough call.
.... in Dallas they don't.
zentrum
(9,865 posts)Tell them you want Moyers. Not that that's enough to be an NPR member but at least give them a hard time.
Prairie Home Companion, if you can take the music, sneaks in progressive values too and mocks Republicans. Dallas is really scary if too right wing for Garrison Keillor.

(28,552 posts).... being a member, by 2002 it was obvious they were just another MSM lie factory.
I really don't give a shit about public radio any more, they are not interested in what their listeners want or they would have found a way to remain listener-supported instead of selling out.
While I'm here let me admit that I love Fresh Air, This American Life, Car Talk and sometimes Radio Lab. What I don't love is their news organization that has become the master of lying by omission.

(9,865 posts)I pretty much turn it off when the news comes on---which is their most important programming. Their mission really.
But I have a guilty conscience because of all those other programs. Besides the ones you mention, there's Moyer's and Company, Le Show, Whad'ya Know, Says Who?, Ted Talks Radio, The Moth Radio Hour, Selected Shorts, LA Theater Works, Bullseye, Snap Judgement, Invisibilia, Reveal, BBC's World Have Your Say, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, To the Best of Our Knowledge.
That's a lot of guilt. But they did cheerlead up to the Iraq war and I can't send money to an outfit that won't do real journalism and on top of it gives cover to the Republican mind set.

(23,156 posts)listening to books on tape or CD. If you can afford it, The Learning Company has absolutely amazing things to listen to. Otherwise, your local library should be a good source.
Oh, and if there's a chance you have a community radio station in your area, you might want to see if you can listen to Amy Goodman, or the BBC, or any other such shows.
Good luck. I know that when you have a long commute you'd like to somehow make the time spent worthwhile.

(6,119 posts)fledgling podcast industry. Instead of NPR in the morning I listen to a repeat of Thom Hartman streamed from a nashville station (without commercials btw), then it is on to The Majority Report with Sam Seder, and Citizen Radio podcasts. Still listen to TAL podcasts though.
