Thirty-two Arizona state legislators received hand-knit, googley-eyed stuffed uteruses from a pro-choice activist yesterday, the Arizona Republic reports.
Each uturus toy was stuffed into a clear plastic bag, along with a letter from Peggy Tinsley, who spearheaded the project, explaining why she opposes a bill that would limit birth control coverage in the state.
Please treat the women in your life as the intelligent persons they are, Tinsley wrote. I have provided you with a uterus. Please leave ours alone.
There is no reason that it should be any different this time, Murray said of the need for all lawmakers to get behind the Democratic bill.
But Democrats want to expand the original law to include provisions that seem to invite opposition from Republicans. Their bill would increase the number of visas available to victims of domestic violence who are undocumented immigrants; ban discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender victims of domestic violence; and give more authority to Native American tribes to address domestic violence.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) disputed that those additions were aimed at making Republicans take a politically uncomfortable vote and potentially go on record opposing a bill focused on protecting women from violence.

Suggested by article by Johan Galtung discussing whether war itself can be abolished:
"Is that (abolition of war) at all possible? Of course it is. To wit:
- in the 19th century we abolished slavery
- in the 20th century we abolished colonialism
- in the 21st century we are abolishing patriarchy.
- in the 19th century we abolished slavery
- in the 20th century we abolished colonialism
- in the 21st century we are abolishing patriarchy.
Note how reframing it this way -- as the abolition of patriarchy ("Patriarchy is a social system in which the males, especially fathers, have central roles of political leadership, moral authority, and property" -- allows us to portray "women's issues" as universal rejection of a self-evidently stupid idea (patriarchy) just like slavery was universal rejection of a self-evidently stupid idea. Making it a "women's issue" often excludes male allies and portray the issues as a struggle for slices of a shrinking pie between 50% men and 50% women.
Abolition in the 19th century was not slave-owners v. slaves. It was (or is viewed now as) universal opposition to the very idea of slavery.
I hope we move away from dispute between men and women to a near-universal rejection of patriarchy. Because most of these Republican anti-woman issues are really just forms of patriarchy. And when you think about it, patriarchy is pretty ridiculous. What high school debater would want to argue for patriarchy?
