Colbert: Global warming caused by immigrants

One thing audiences love about conservative firebrand Stephen Colbert is that he’s not afraid to state the uncomfortable truths, the things that lie beyond the realms of liberals’ namby-pamby notions of “political correctness.” Time and time again the “Colbert Report” host has shown us that such murky territory sometimes provides us with gleaming new forms of truthiness that we never knew existed.

Wednesday night’s edition of nightly “Colbert Report” segment, “The Word,” examined an ad currently running during prime time on some California MSNBC affiliate stations. The commercial, created by Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS) alleges that studies have show that immigrants to the United States create four times the volume of carbon emissions than in their own countries.

The fact that this only means they come to America and begin to eat, drive and waste energy like Americans doesn’t apparently matter to CAPS, whose website buzzes and hums with dog-whistle racist code words like “Anchor Babies” and “reconquista,” which is the notion that Hispanics are out to claim parts of the southwestern U.S. for Mexico.

A very little digging by Colbert found that the “immigrants and their carbon footprints” study was done by The Center for Immigration Studies, a right-wing think tank headed by John Tanton, who, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, has been a stalwart of the U.S. white supremacist, anti-immigration movement for decades.

So the right wing now admits to the existence of climate change? Maybe we should all move to the immigrants' countries - that will reduce it!

are to blame for global warming. (The silver lining here is that an arch-conservative organization acknowledges the existence of man-made global warming - if only for the purpose of this one study. ) Put this on the "Things that don't surprise me" list.

The CIS is should extend its study to evaluate the idea that we could solve global warming entirely if the whole rest of the world - excluding the US, of course - lived in Third World poverty. Sorry you 95% of humans who are not Americans. Somebody has to sacrifice to save the globe. Thanks.

And if you've ever eaten Mexican food, you will know that the intrinsic connection between illegal immigration and global warming which Mr. Colbert has trumpeted to the wold is no laughing matter.
