New Year, New Pup! Meet Yule: Our First Harbor Seal Pup of 2015 (corrected)

Pupping season started early at The Marine Mammal Center this year, with our first harbor seal pup admitted just a few days after the new year’s arrival.

Named “Yule” in celebration of the holiday season, this fuzzy, gray harbor seal pup was two feet long and only weighed about 12 pounds when he was found abandoned on the beach in Santa Barbara, California.

Just a few days old at the time of his rescue, Yule was much too young to fend for himself! Since arriving in our care, he’s being receiving nearly round-the-clock feedings of a special milk formula we’ve developed over the years.

Our veterinary experts report that Yule seems to be in good health and has been getting stronger every day. They’ve even given him a stuffed seal to keep him company!

While Yule is the first pup of 2015 in our care, he won’t be the last. Stay tuned for more stories about the pups in our care as our busy season gets underway.

Oh man, I hope Yule pulls through! He is adorable and I would like to reach through the screen and give him a big squish. It looks like the volunteers and the vets are taking great care of him.
