He might as well tell them to eat cake because he obviously hasn't been to the store lately and seen the price of rice and beans.

The really bad part is it is hard to eat the same thing every day. A treat is when I can buy some chicken to put in it, I am a vegetarian that breaks the rules with poultry sometimes just to make myself want to eat from time to time.

I grew up in a neighborhood that housed many families that had this as their diet, mostly poor white trash such as myself or Puerto Ricans that still spoke very little English. (we all lived in a housing complex by the Peace Bridge near Porter Ave).

One can live on less money this way (soak your own beans to save even more and buy giant bags of rice as that is the cheap way to buy rice), no one I know is happy with such a limited diet however and it is not something I recommend unless as a means to survive with limited options available to you.

If you have no choice but to eat this way, it tastes better with some Sazon (a spice) in it, you will find packets of it among the Goya stuff.

I grew up in South America and we ate beans every day at our main meal at noon, but we also ate other things with the beans. We had sweet rolls and coffee for breakfast and we had tea in the evening with toast and jam and other food like fruit and cookies instead of dinner. No one should be expected to have to eat just beans and rice and only once a day, not in America. I hope your circumstances will improve and the circumstances of everyone else in your boat. I really do, and jerks like Sean Hannity deserve to disappear from the scene permanently. Bringing back that 90% progressive tax on the likes of him to pay for programs to create jobs and put social programs back in place where they were in the sixties looks better and better to me all the time.

As a disabled man that has a condition beyond the stage where it is treatable, I can not work, All I get now is food stamps (they have been screwing me around with medicaid and cash assistance for six months now).

SSD should be available to me as I am too sick to work and will die from this as well (when is a matter of disagreement) and have paid into SS for over 35 years, and yet I was refused and my lawyer said it will be another 18 months before I get a hearing.

Social services has me in a catch 22 where I either have to work (to gain experience for free at 40 hours a week) or admit I can not actually do that much work, that requires my physician to fill out paper work, once done, now that I have reapplied for the third time I can get Medicaid, about $380 a month for rent as well as utilities (not actualy enough to do that but that is what they give) and $200 mo in food stamps.

The catch 22 is that I can not get a physician to fill out the paperwork until I have medicaid as an insurer, I need to fill out the paperwork before I get Medicaid, catch 22, I lose.

What I will probably have to do is work 40 hours a week (at least till I fall over and am taken to the Hospital) as slave labor for that small $380 stipend to get "experience" I don't need (I am a highly skilled craftsman that has experience in three separate trades all starting at 20 an hour even at non-union scale). Obviously, if I could work, I would work for the $20 plus an hour.

This is the nightmare I live in, I sell foodstamps at 50 cents on the dollar just to keep the electric on, while taking less than a quarter to buy rice and beans, and they (both parties) think our safety net needs cutting.

And folks on this site wonder why I get cranky.

should it be necessary in a country with supermarkets bulging with a variety of food. What is the use of all that food if people can't afford to buy it? Monotonous, cheap food is what people escaping from famine get in refugee camps and I'm sure they are glad to get it, but in America?

I've run into prior misconceptions about what salsa fresca or pico is. Some folks seem to think it is unhealthy. Perhaps they believe it's a typical French sauce. Basically, the predominant ingredients are raw tomato and onion and peppers. fruits and veggies. Make that raw fruits and veggies. You can't really buy it in the stores unless it is adulterated with preservatives. It cannot be canned or bottled, because it's no longer fresh from the heating.

I also think you must be viewing the health aspect through different eyeglasses than I use. Beans and rice are staples from well known cuisines. The reason why those cuisines evolved to be known as regional cuisines is because the people who at them survived and successfully bred.

"What is the use of all that food if people can't afford to buy it?"

That's a good question. I think we've been discussing the super bad economy for going on what, 10 years now here on DU? I can't afford 99-100% of the food in some grocery stores, and maybe 90% of it from a few less expensive places.

Just this morning another thread referenced this report that seems to say more folks are going to go hungry, unless income is redistributed to the poor.

day. However, we ate a variety of other food too. My point is that one shouldn't have to eat the same every day and nothing else because it's unhealthy and unappetizing. Also, have you priced produce these days? For the same reason that food in general has gone up because the fuel to transport it has gone up, if you don't grow your own it's very expensive. Even growing your own can be expensive for the soil amendments, fertilizers and water you need. I just came from the store and paid 1.79 for a head of broccoli and 2.29 for brussels sprouts. Back when I was in college, cabbages were the cheapest in the produce aisle and that's what we ate along with canned tuna.

I can't afford those prices you quote. I don't care for brussels sprouts, perhaps because I never thought to fry them in olive oil (which itself is pricey). I've never lived in South America, no where but USA.

I do know that were I to pay some grocery store's prices for tomatoes, it wouldn't save much money vs buying the refrigerated kind of salsa with all the preservatives. I've often found that pricing in some grocery stores as suspect.

As it is, I agree with you that plain beans and plain rice is not the most appetizing of foods to eat. However, if those items are prepared well--something that homeless folks would not be able to do, even folks trying to follow recipes it would take them some time to learn how to do so if they could filter out all the dreck recipes--then you couldn't serve me another meal I'd like any better.
