You Are All Suspects Now. What Are You Going To Do About It?
By John Pilger
You are all potential terrorists. It matters not that you live in Britain, the United States, Australia or the Middle East. Citizenship is effectively abolished. Turn on your computer and the US Department of Homeland Security's National Operations Center may monitor whether you are typing not merely "al-Qaeda," but "exercise," "drill," "wave," "initiative" and "organization": all proscribed words. The British government's announcement that it intends to spy on every email and phone call is old hat. The satellite vacuum cleaner known as Echelon has been doing this for years. What has changed is that a state of permanent war has been launched by the United States and a police state is consuming western democracy.
What are you going to do about it?

By this September, 9/11 will be eleven years ago. Yet despite the War on Terror, the loss of Americans' privacy and civil liberties, an expenditure of trillions of dollars on numerous wars, violations of US and international laws against torture, and so forth, no one has been held accountable. Neither the perpetrators nor those whom the perpetrators outwitted, assuming that they are different people, have been held accountable. Going on 11 years and no trials of villains or chastisement of negligent public officials. This is remarkable.
What are you going to do about it?

It's also true for out-of-control imperialism, war and peace overall, political corruption, corporate power, illusory democracy, elections little more than theater, police state lawlessness, an unprecedented wealth disparity, shocking poverty, unemployment, hunger and homelessness levels, and numerous other issues in the world's richest country.
Widespread public ignorance keeps these and other abuses out of public consciousness and concern enough to demand political Washington address them responsibly.
Instead, officials serve wealth and power alone. As a result, popular needs go begging, especially under mandated austerity to pay bankers and wage imperial wars.
A nation of morons literally lets America get away with murder, erode human and civil rights, and leave millions uninformed, on their own, out of luck.

(9,186 posts)those who don't give a shit if they lose the next election, they ran on PRINCIPLE and stuck with those principles.
If torture is wrong, you get rid of it!
If Corporations are not people, you risk your political future to Kill that notion and bury it deep in the fucking ground.
If 16 million children are going to bed hungry at night, we need to tell Boehner and Ryan, FUCK You, we're pulling funding for Halliburton and XE in Iraq and Afghanistan...and we are feeding our children tonight, tomorrow and forever.
We need to return to politicians who run for office to serve America, not Corporate America.

(32,324 posts)Only thing is, the political process is beyond broken.
We saw how it barely mattered, in terms of pulling away money from Halliburton and XE, even when we ahd the Democratic President in the WH, and the Democratic majority in both houses.
Far too many "Dems" in office are every bit as beholden to the MIC as the Republicans are.
Obama's Administration offered up over 255 Billions of dollars to the UAE, Israel, and the"modernization" of our military between August 2010 and November 2011. This is an obscene amount of money, as it doesn't even factor in the amounts of money spent in the same time period for things like Homeland Security and TSA.
Think of what that 255 Billions of dollars would have done for the states that are being bankrupted by the fact that they have much less tax revenue than six years ago.

(11,481 posts)I'm as prepared as I can be for the possibility of jail or internment for my political beliefs. This country and indeed all of the capitalist "Democracies" are just an edict away from fascism. And I'm an implacable enemy of fascism. I expect internment is in my future.

after they find that red flip flop of yours...

(6,670 posts)Racial epithet? You mean "President Obama"? It's the only reference to him in the article.
No ads for me - you must not know how to operate your browser.
"His buddy"? This isn't one of those "smear by association" sorts of things like the way the Tea Party thinks about people with cooties, is it? What the fuck is it about?
If he's on the same side as Assange, then he's working for human freedom, the right to make informed decisions, and the right to expose crime without fear of persecution, and it's EXACTLY the side I expect Democrats to be on.

(37,549 posts)Mr. Pilger is, in fact, a friend of Mr. Assange....he offered to put up bail for him, and is the leading proponent of the theory that Mr. Assange's sex crime accusers are fronted by the CIA.

(53,661 posts)Here is Paul Craig Roberts' blog:
http://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2012/04/25/trials-without-crimes-or-evidence/
Many Democrats do not agree with Reaganomics, yet he still defends them:
http://www.zcommunications.org/paul-craig-roberts-indefensible-defense-of-reaganomics-by-jack-rasmus
From another website on the 'Father of Reaganomics':
Paul Craig Roberts father of Reagonomics : How we lost our economy
Paul Craig Roberts is a great researcher and whistlerblower , but Jeez anytime I hear that 'father of Reaganomics' it send chills up my spine and I say to myself : Why would I trust any one who was a creator of Reaganomics. It was Reagan who the first one to raid Social Security. It was Dick Cheney who said, Reagan proved that debt didn't matter. Well Debt does matter, and if this guy Paul Craig Roberts was creator of Reaganomics then he's part of the problem not the solution. well i hope I am just too paranoid and flat wrong
http://geraldcelentechannel.blogspot.com/2011/03/paul-craig-roberts-perfidy-of.html
So even if I was to find Roberts interesting, despite the company he keeps and what they are advocating, I have my doubts about his slant on things. We can't live in an information bubble and I find DU to be the best source of information and news on the net, as well as a lot of fun at times. I have been a Democrat for all my voting life and hard left, and my representatives are hard left, but outvoted.
I can also see the trends as to where this world is going, and I don't like it. I think we can only guide the future to something more humane and free by taking action, but not with guns as the right wants to rid the country of all liberals, Democrats, gays, women's rights and Obama.
And as I said, I don't speak for misathrope. I hope that anyone who is a fan of Mr. Roberts will understand I am not telling them to have a closed mind. And I do not, in any way, support the videos I have put here to illustrate why some people do not like or trust Mr. Roberts. If anyone believes I should remove them from this post, please post here or send me a PM and I will remove the videos or links from here.

(406 posts)I've seen the movie "Idiocracy", so my guess about the movie, it was a documentary of life in the future.
So the movie answered the question, and shows what happens when the nation of Morons run out of luck, only the movie had a hero to save the bunch of dumb asses from themselves and the destruction of everything.
But it was just a movie, right?

(10,622 posts)Voting for the lesser evil appears to lead to the same evils, (Patriot Act, NDAA, all of our private documents and conversations being gathered, no right to trial, death sentences without trial, indefinite detention).
How is the destruction of our civil liberties any less evil when it comes from the center right of fascism as opposed to a more traditionally right fascism?
Does dog shit smell better if one calls it Neo-Liberal rather than Neo-Con?
Smells the same to me and there is nothing I can do when both parties agree to screw us all.

First and foremost, no television and no debt, a checking account with no more than a small emergency fund in it, work for and pay with cash only, work with local human beings, avoid corporate products (especially food) as much as possible.
I really do need to get a passport.

(8,994 posts)Help the government defend America on AL QAEDA by exposing every terrorism EXERCISE DRILL, BOMB PLOT and PLANE HIJACKING scheme that you discover. If you find anything that looks like ANTHRAX powder do not touch it, call the FBI immediately. If you see any NITROGEN BASED FERTILIZER or TNT or DYNAMITE, call the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives immediately. Be on the lookout for ISLAMIC TERRORIST RECRUITERS, as they may be as close as your next door neighbor. If you hear someone talking about SMALLPOX or other dangerous viruses, again, call the FBI immediately. Take the INITIATIVE to report any extremist ORGANIZATION to your nearest law enforcement agency. Uncle Sam needs patriotic citizens like YOU to stop AL QAEDA'S WAVE of terrorism!
