House Bill 1598 is called the Freedom to Obtain Conversion Therapy Act. A third measure would allow businesses to refuse to provide services to the gay community, among others.
Kern, R-Oklahoma City, garnered national attention a few years ago when she said the homosexual agenda was destroying the nation and poses a bigger threat to the nation than terrorism....
Oklahomans for Equality condemns this all-out assault on the LGBT citizens of Oklahoma, said Toby Jenkins, executive director of the Tulsa-based organization. The courts have already ruled on the legality of same-sex marriages. To take our state backward a decade is obviously what our legislators are trying to accomplish.

(12,778 posts)but even here in Oklahoma she's pretty much considered an embarrassment. It's just so hard to get a Democrat elected here that she keeps getting elected by inertia. I haven't checked to see how long she has been in office, but I'm hoping she's getting close to her term limit.
I hope the good people of OK pick someone better someday.

(231 posts)I honestly believe these people do more good than harm to the gay community. Our biggest problem isn't that lots of people hate us, it's that lots of well meaning people aren't paying attention. They're probably all for equal treatment of GLBT people, but when they don't see discrimination or bigotry, they wonder why gay folks make such a big deal about it.
There is no chance of turning back the clock on the advances made by GLBT people at this point, and people like Rep. Kern are not going to convince any fair minded people to share their bigotry. But the Sally Kerns of the world do call attention to the fact that there still is discrimination and bigotry. They do make good people wonder what it must be like to be a 14 year old gay kid hearing that his "agenda" is destroying the nation. They do promote a bit of empathy in our straight friends.
So go for it Sally. I think you'll find that hate backfires in the long run.
