But some people just like to hurt others. Look at cops beating protesters--I guarantee you most are probably not on drugs. Power fucks with people, and if you've got someone who already had a mean streak, they'll happily do as much harm as they can if they think they can get away with it.

Otherwise their empathy would be too great to abuse those they perceive as beneath them so easily.

I would hazard a guess that adrenalin simply amps up their willingness to do violence--it's a high of sorts, and they get it both from the release involved in physical violence as well as the pleasure they take in both harming others and exerting their dominance over a perceived inferior. I don't think it's necessarily a root cause, as you notice that protesters, despite being filled with adrenaline, do not choose to respond in the same manner in which they are attacked.

It's all gone scary wrong.

That's about as good of a way to sum it up as I've heard.
