Twenty Pounds of BS in a Ten-Pound Bag
By William Rivers Pitt
Truthout | Op-Ed
Let me be perfectly clear from the jump: It was a fine speech, one of the best of President Obama's political career, which makes it automatically one of the best in the State of the Union's august history. The last fifteen minutes, in particular, were absolutely soaring, not just in rhetoric, but in the delivery as well. The man parked it as deep as it can be parked, like a majestic David Ortiz line drive deep into the bleachers at Fenway, thanks for coming, turn out the lights when you leave. No one does it better that Barack Obama when the bright lights are on.
...and when it was over, my immediate thought was of Steven the Irishman, the self-declared madman from the film Braveheart. Mel Gibson had just given his rousing speech to keep the Scots from fleeing before the battle at Stirling Bridge.
"Fine speech," said Steven. "Now what do we do?"
Indeed.
You see, apparently we've "turned the page" on the economic wasteland created by our Neo-Con/Neo-Liberal brain trust in Washington. The shadow of crisis has passed, and we're on a new foundation.
How many people do you know who actually feel that way?
Just about everyone I know is economically scared to death, and most of them are living paycheck to paycheck...and brothers and sisters, I know a whole hell of a lot of people, in all fifty states and most of the territories. I ain't Pew or Gallup, so take this with as many grains of salt you need to choke it down, but here's the hard truth: No pages have been turned, and the new foundation is just as porous as the old one...because it's the same old God damned foundation. Lather, rinse, repeat.
The President of the United States gave a speech on Tuesday night that would, in parts, have gone over like gangbusters at any Occupy rally in the country, and then he turned on a dime to brag about our massively impressive oil and gas production, i.e. fracking and maybe the Keystone XL pipeline, and then went on further to give an impassioned aria about climate change, at which point my brain crawled out of my ear and slithered into the bathroom, where it wept piteously into the cold porcelain truth of the base of the toilet.

Something that emerges from privilege and education in a nation that has the greatest income differential in history? Furthermore, the way that you did it was condescending and shitty. What purpose can that possibly serve?

(86,005 posts)...which highlighted political goals which most of us realize may already be out of reach of this presidency.
As you wrote, many of our progressive concerns about the pipeline, oil production, economic justice, foreign policy and warring, and intelligence and privacy concerns cannot be assuaged by such a self-promoting legacy address which really didn't attempt to come anywhere close to acknowledging our progressive concerns; much less commit to pursuing them.
To me, that's par for politicians, like the President; not the stuff of revolutionary change; not likely to adequately confront the status quo in ways which will bring much of that progressive change we want to a level of action which will impact the lives of those of us who struggle to make ends meet.
My own overriding concern was the lack of acknowledgement of the ongoing protests against police brutality. That lack was highlighted by the news of the failure of the Justice Dept. to find cause to charge Darren Wilson. Understandable, given the law, I guess, but still a disappointment to realize that there's no real or visible pushback from the WH. So, it was, much as you described, pablum directed at, perhaps, those who have cause to be optimistic. I'm certainly not one of them.

You are right that most Americans are still suffering. The proposals Obama made would spread the prosperity to those of us who are not in the 1% or the .01%.

Earlier when I came up with original Why Im voting or Obama post, I saw this picture. Over the last few days, Ive thought more about this picture, and what I think it says about him as a person. This is the same week that Sarah Palins $150,000 shopping spree came to light (and a week after umm.. anonymous sources said Michelle Obama ordered Caviar and Champagne at a high end NY hotel, which was false), but its not really about that. This is about someone with the ability to wear brand new shoes, but doesnt see the need to spend the money. Right now this is what our country needs.
Ultimately, it came down to the fact I want to remember this picture. If youll read the blog, youll see one salient theme its about stuff I care to remember.
This photo came from the same photo essay as earlier. You need to hit show more images a few times to get all the photos. Its great work. The original caption was:
Senator Obama was doing press interviews by telephone in a holding room between events. Sometime later as he was getting ready to begin his event, he asked me if I was photographing his shoes. When I said yes, he told me that he had already had them resoled once since he entered the race a year earlier. Providence, R.I., 3/1/2008.

About his shoes in your photo. I totally understand why he wanted to keep wearing his old shoes. My favorite shoes are always hard for me to finally let go of. Tee shirts too. I wore a pair of Clarks shoes for almost 15 years before they finally had an unfixable blow-out. I buried those shoes with honors, instead of sending them to the land fill. The first shoes I'd ever owned, besides work boots, that I paid $100.00 for.
America can't keep taking hits to our quality of life like the TPP deal, without finally declining into true third world status, IMHO.

This OP hit a deep nerve, as you can tell by the BOG swarm above working desperately to divert to any topic other than the actual content of the OP.
This corporate Trojan horse presidency is STILL systematically working to shove TPP down our throats and empower corporations to exploit millions more of us. The speech promised unprecedented corporate domination, more bloody war for profit, continued evisceration of our fundamental freedoms...all wrapped up in pretty progressive rhetoric that the president doesn't have to worry about fulfilling, because the DCCC "Accept Doom" midterm strategy worked, and corporate Republicans now have majorities. What a scam. What a perfect example of what corporate government give us: Shiny lies and advertisements designed to mask an agenda that is dismantling democracy itself.
Nothing is more important than exposing Third Way infiltration, predation, and lies in our party. Nothing is more important than making sure that Hillary or another Third Way corporatist in a Democrat suit is not shoved down our throats as the Democratic nominee in 2016.
This country cannot survive four more years of pretty progressive lies wrapped around a real agenda of TPP, endless war for profit, and police state dismantling of our Bill of Rights.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
Clearly intended to be hurtful and rude, not addressing the contents of the post being replied to at all, just taking a cheap shot at the poster being replied to = hide
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Jan 23, 2015, 08:21 PM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Unclear to me whether poster is amused by the column title or disagreeing with the content. In either case, a frivolous alert.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: The infighting that's apparent throughout this entire thread is what's bullshit. Address the content instead of personally attacking another DU member, please. I vote to hide such crap to make an attempt to preserve what's left of this community.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It is commentary on the post, not the poster. And the post comments in the same way the article title does. Doesn't violate the TOS here.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(31,869 posts)I normally comment - or even put my name when I am on a jury - but the alert made no sense.

(71,265 posts)You have the right to your views but imo you are too down on our president. I did not care for it when our President was called a used-car salesman, and I don't care for this.

(32,139 posts)not only the manipulative dishonesty of speeches like the SOTU address, but also the now wholly predictable swarms of vitriol from the corporate talking points brigade whenever the actual record and policies of Third Way politicians are compared to their manipulative rhetoric.
What we see is illustrative of corporate government. Advertising and propaganda have replaced democratic representation of the people. Corporations don't represent anyone. They grow their own power. And they use manipulation, advertisements, and propaganda to do it. That's why our politics are now full of lies. Demonstrable lies.
Just this month, we got Cronybus and a new "war room" for the TPP from our corporate Democratic president. A continuation of a now-familiar pattern of six long years of vicious corporate betrayals in every single major policy area. Yet we are *still* hectored to celebrate a speech that tries to veil these mammoth, malignant, concrete betrayals with pretty populist hypotheticals the DCCC midterm campaign of "Accept Doom" has already carefully ensured can never materialize.
It's a familiar, ugly, manipulative song. It's a script we know by heart by now. Pretty words, denying the ongoing, undeniable, savage betrayals. All of the most malignant policies of the Bush administration have been aggressively protected and expanded, and now we look down the barrel of MORE deregulation of criminal banks and MORE predatory, antidemocratic "free trade" agreements that will further impoverish Americans and prevent us from using our own democratic institutions to protect ourselves from corporate predation.
The Third Way is a menace. Its purchased politicians are systematically dismantling democracy itself while smiling and pretending to be our democratic representatives.
But the policies speak for themselves. They can't be denied. At a certain point, "2+2=5" just doesn't fly anymore.
Nothing is more important than being truthful about the corporate-bankrolled infiltration of our party by corporate liars and thieves. Nothing.
We need real change, not the fake "Hope and Change" kind.
It's time.
