Authorities are looking for the people in this photo who might provide investigators useful information.
FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -
Vandals damaged an ancient archaeological site in mid-December and federal authorities need help finding them.
U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officials released a photo on Tuesday hoping tips will lead them to people seen in the picture who might be able to assist them in their investigation.
Several people were seen on Dec. 16 removing and throwing rocks from the walls of the site known as Jordan Cave near the Jordan Trailhead parking lot in Sedona. The rocks were flung over a steep embankment.
Some of the rocks were also dug from the prehistoric floor of the site and tossed over the ledge.

(86,775 posts)Common among those who insist that the earth is only 6.000 years old... such evidence that they are incorrect is a threat to their ideology. And if it was LDS clowns like the ones who knocked over that balanced rock not too terribly far from there, they're self proclaimed saints so whatever they do is a-okay. You know, like their big saint mittens.
Vandalism and defacing ancient treasures is a big problem in the SW. I think it also has something to do with disrespect, it wasn't white people who built these ancient structures etc. after all.
I almost wish I could identify them, it would give me great satisfaction to see them "brought to justice".

(4,524 posts)Someone at Greenpeace thought it would be a great idea to put their stupid letters over the Nazca lines. They ended up doing damage to the site.

Like I said, I wish the ASSROCKETS would just .....go away. Far, far away. To a galaxy with no oxygen, for example.

(8,614 posts)The destruction was planned, supported and carried out by Greenpeace. It was advertised by them, they were PROUD of it. They should see the inside of a Peruvian prison for a long time. And this includes ALL people involved, including the directors.

Cryptic remarks and no info don't confer license to upbraid people, Mr. Shooter.
And still, that nullifies their wins over the years?

(4,571 posts)In previous confrontations with governments and corporations, Greenpeace has generally declined to name its activists.
Whats different this time is that it seems like this was a rogue operation from within Greenpeace Germany, explains Hertsgaard. It was not approved by higher ups at least this is what Greenpeace is saying now in its report to Peruvian authorities.
According to Greenpeace, the leader of the Nazca Lines action was Wolfgang Sadik, a veteran campaigner with Greenpeace Germany. Hertsgaard says Sadik isnt explaining his actions.
He still hasnt spoken to the press. Hes been in hiding for over a month now.
Two of the other three activists named in the report also work for Greenpeace Germany: Martin Kaiser and Iris Wiedemann. The fourth person named is Mauro Fernandez, a staffer with Greenpeace Argentina who served as an interpreter during the Nazca action.

(20,219 posts)I was a Gahan Wilson fan. That one was really hard to take. Made me feel ill.
When I visited England in the 80's, I got to see Stonehenge. It was amazing, but there was a cheezy trinket store at the entrance...you could only access through a gate across the path......hard to remember exactly, but it was cordoned off.
You couldn't walk amongst the stones or touch them, because of the damage people had done. That made me feel ill, too.
And then, there was an American couple...very much like Madge and Phil, loudly complaining about, "what's the big deal? It's just a bunch of rocks."
Reallllllly made me feel ill.

(20,219 posts)I can't say I agree that the cartoonist creates the world we live in, as much as any statesman, though.
Reflects aspects, highlights them, clarifies currents, but I don't think they direct the tide......
That's just my initial thought....

(55,745 posts)Thank you for those Gahan Wilson works. The guy could see where our world was heading:
The world needs people who can see a better one -- and can paint a picture of what they see (or one of its opposite) for us to consider. I was borrowing from Percy Bysshe Shelly, who wrote: Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.
BlancheSplanchnik
(20,219 posts)I feel sick to my stomach. We're awfully close to that now.
Thank you for the Shelly quote...I'm way behind in the classics. Can't say I think it's true, but I've never been a poetry fan either...except for ASL (American Sign Language) poetry. But still....I don't think poetry reaches a broad enough swath, either. Not classical poetry, anyway. (This is all just my musings, btw)
I'm more inclined to think that messages that circulate among the masses communicate powerfully--reinforces what's expected, but also creates expectation.
Pop culture, and its arbiters, then, have a huge influence. Allen Ginsberg said, "Whoever controls the media, the images, controls the culture." That, I am inclined to believe.
However, due to the interwebz, there is another avenue of communication, hence (im not-very ho) the importance and popularity of memes. They give the microphone to a much larger number and variety of players now; people whose voices historically reached a very small circumference.
Hmmm...well...again, I was thinking out loud..... I know there's much more complexity than this....

Reading about it i also learned that it is not in an area open to the public. These guys had to go there with a purpose, its not just an accident.

(16,184 posts)They ruin it for the rest of us. They trash caves, dump their junk all over the trail, and force DNR to close entire attractions or trails to clean up their fucking messes.
For anyone that goes hiking and camping:
1) Bring trash bags and dump your trash in them, not on the trail.
2) Stay on the damn trail and don't stomp all over the scenery.
3) If you see some and can safely do so, pick up whatever trash you find.

(2,334 posts)Fifty plus years. The shit that tourists will pull around Sedona lets me know that urbanites (read city folk) should stick to the trails in the local mall. But this area depends on their showing up. Tourist dollars. Fortunately, there are ruins in areas that are protected from the idiots simply due to the knowing where and the getting there. In fact the majority of it.
