Roe v. Wade was about the human rights of women: privacy, self-determination, and equality. Abortion was the driver for the court case, but it wasnt the core. At its center, Roe v. Wade said that women were entitled to the same rights as men. Small wonder, then, that conservatives hate it so. Teapublicans hate equality, and Roe cost them a lot of control over women.
See that chart up there? Its what happens when most women dont vote. White Republican men and their quisling spouses voted in 2010 and 2014 while non-Teavangelical women largely sat it out, and now all American females are at imminent risk of being returned to second-class status.
Its neither a surprise nor a secret: the GOPee has had the subjugation of the majority of our citizens (reminder: thats women) as its goal since long before the Supreme Court announced its historic decision on this day in 1973. All Roe did was make republicans less complacent and more energetic in their efforts to keep women under the thumbs of men.
Meanwhile, the majority of women have themselves become complacent. A significant minority have joined the oppressors, and the few who dare raise their voices at the shameful treatment women are receiving these days are mocked at best, and violently assaulted or killed at worst.
American women are the majority of eligible voters and could stop all this s*** in a few short election cycles. Lets hope that happens.

(18,186 posts)It just galls me that Marcia Blackburn and all the other Repukes only care about abortion. We have people really suffering in TN and all Blackburn gives a fuck about is appealing to the most ignorant base of her party. She has done NOTHING to help the people of this state - unless they are wealthy people. She should hide her head in shame.
Women's reproductive rights should be a non-issue. That was settled years ago. If Blackburn and the rest of the MONEY WHORES in Congress would spend time HELPING women rather than trying to treat them as if the government OWNS them we could move forward.
Thanks you for caring.

(525 posts)Body autonomy is generally considered a human right. It means a person has control over who or what uses their body. Including for what it is used, and how long it is used.
You can't be forced to donate blood, tissue, or organs. Even if you are dead. Even if you would save or improve 10 lives.
And no, having sex doesn't mean you give up your body autonomy.
A fetus is using someone's body - it's there by permission, not by right. If the pregnant person denies or withdraws consent, the pregnant person should have a right to remove the fetus.
By saying a fetus has a right to someone's body parts until it's born, despite the pregnant person's wishes, then you've granted more rights to a fetus to others bodies than a born person, and given a pregnant person less rights than a frickin' corpse.
Thank you riqster for this post and links.
