White Teenage Criminals Are Cuddly And Cute And White And Not Really Criminals Really!

http://wonkette.com/572824/white-teenage-criminals-are-cuddly-and-cute-and-white-and-not-really-criminals-really

Dalton Hayes, an 18-year-old out on bond from a burglary charge, and Cheyenne Philips, his 13-year-old “girlfriend,” ran away from their respective homes in Kentucky and stole a series of cars around the South before being arrested two weeks later. It’s a simple enough story: star-crossed lovers go on multistate crime spree! We’re rooting for ya, white kids! Here’s the headline from the Associated Press, as published in the Los Angeles Times:

We did not cherry-pick this headline. “Bonnie and Clyde” was the dominant description used for “Hayes and Phillips,” as evidenced by this snapshot from Google News:

A reality show probably. It's America 21st Century. Older but not wiser. Bet Faux or Mrs. Greenspan breaks in during SOTU just to get another glimpse of the cute couple. Totally newsworthy.

I posted it, yes. I'll account for my posting it. No one wants to see anyone die in a hail of gunfire.

The point of the article, if you can get past the headline is that the teenager were being portrayed in a romantic fashion.

... Rings a deep romantic mythos that we all can recognize.

It's easy even of a type or subgenre; from the Warren Beatty film to Thelma and Louise.

From what I read, it was mostly theft and carjacking. Hardly Bonnie and Clyde, who killed at least a dozen people while robbing banks. The press needed a sensational story and turned these two idiots into Bonnie and Clyde.

there were laws lately still in effect that used to let 13 year olds get married in Nebraska with the parents and local judges consent.

Was the girl held against her will? If she was kidnapped why was she arrested? Kidnap victims are returned to family not arrested.

This is barely newsworthy itself. It only is because some idiot somewhere in the media started the whole "Bonnie and Clyde" thing.

And being called "Bonnie and Clyde" isn't exactly "vanilla." The real Bonnie and Clyde killed a bunch of people, including 9 cops, while robbing banks and stores in a multi-state crime spree.

This kid is a punk, but he's no Clyde. And the girl is no Bonnie.
