President Obama State of the Union Address.

It's at 9pm eastern. What are you looking forward to seeing tonight?

I most look forward to the President explaining his plan to lower tax rates for the majority and raise taxes on the richest. I think inequality is a major issue we must address moving forward. In Eisenhower's Presidency, a time of prosperity and peace, the highest marginal tax rates on personal income were around 80%. I think we need much more of that type of taxation now, and I think democrats and all progressives should get behind it.

Also his proposal to assist with two years' free community college for qualified students who maintain good grades. Are there state plans already, where the federal government can assist?

I look forward to him describing the positive results of the Affordable Care Act. Especially hearing him present how we can strengthen it going forward, to get more people health care at lower cost. We have enough wealth in this country right now to provide health care - care, not just insurance - to all. I want to hear how we can move more toward this goal.

I'd love to hear him propose a national holiday for voting days. It would enfranchise more people and stimulate participation.

Finally, I'd like to see him tell his critics to kiss his Presidential butt.

Thoreau said most of what passes for 'news' is just gossip about tragedies. And that was in the early 19th century!

Oh, wait...

His take on community college is great, but the K-12 system is far more important at this juncture.

I do hope he plays up the ACA, though.

I'll watch the speech (I always do) but I have no real hope that much of what President Obama will propose has a chance in Congress. I understand why much of the world is baffled by our political system. We-the-people elect a guy to be President, then we turn around (usually only 2 years later) and elect a majority in Congress that is committed to opposing the ideas of the President we elected. Then we complain that nothing gets done.

Washington doesn't do policy anymore, just politics. And it's not Washington's fault. It's ours.

going forward I think it's really fascinating. I want to see the democratic party become much more populist. Go for real, positive change. Double taxes on the richest. Double the minimum wage. Single payer health care. Double the capital gains tax. Stuff that really would make a difference all across the country. Get rid of these useless super pro-corporate democrats who don't give a crap for average working people.

Something we can all do is become engaged and support younger people with smart progressive ideals to run for office in every local election. I've mentioned it to some younger friends and they usually laugh and say 'no way!' So I tell them to spread the word around among their peers - we need good people in all positions. Ones who are bought and paid for by rich special interests.
